80's style post-appocolyptic shmups
Are there any? Maybe any-time post-apocolyptic shmups? I'm talking about Thundar the Barbarian, Trojan, maybe even a little vampire hunter D.
All I can think of is Forgotten Worlds for an extreme example. Maybe a little Last Resort- actually, that's not so bad with the flooded city level.
Anything else?
I want a list of all smups dealing with post-apocolyptic material.

Well, at the moment I recall Macross - Ai Oboeteimasuka for Saturn. There are a couple of levels that take place on the earth completely destroyed by the aliens - the same happening in the movie - and the first level takes place in the Macross ship in ruins for the previous attack of the alien zentraedi.
I clearly remember another hori shmup whose name fails me (but someone here will recognize it for sure) and its first level had a half-flooded destroyed metropolis on the background.

Alas, Ikaruga is going...
Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Darius Gaiden should qualify. Zone A's red sky does look rather postapocalyptic. The intro does set the stage well, with the attack on Vadis and a squadron of Silver Hawks being obliterated. DG's BGM is a lot darker than that in all the other installments.
Right before the boss, Air Buster's first stage has the city being lasered into rubble WHILE you fly over it.
Oh yes, then there's Sidearms. I nearly forgot about that one. Section Z as well?

It is indeed. But the city is not destroyed and it seems quite bustling with activity. Only the sky is rather threatening. If the "mood" does it as well, I think that the first stage of Last Resort should do it as well. Kinda.gameoverDude wrote:Darius Gaiden should qualify. You might want to check Sammy's Bio-ship Paladin as well. The world has been destroyed and the cities lie in ruin under a thuderous sky. And yeah, of course Side Arms as well. It begins with the world being a bombarded to extintion

Also, Forgotten Worlds might be what you're looking for. Pretty decent too!

I'm sure there's a ton of these out there. Master of Weapon (the 9/11 game) seems to be set in a post-war setting, and I'd say Last Resort seems pretty close to a post-apocalyptic world. Other than the choices already mentioned, I can't actually think of much.
Let's not forget various versions of Space Invaders, either.
What games are pre-apocalypse until your ship travels through?
