Gynoug | Playstation, Switch, Xbox | Nov 12

Post by Astro City II »

Hot on the heels of the recent excellent Gleylancer port the next chosen shmup from Ratalaika games is Gynoug and it'll be available next month. November 12th

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/gynoug/9p0d2ptq0jvk

There's a trailer on the Xbox marketplace page.

Should imagine it's Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series like Gleylancer.

Not personally interested, being happy with the MD carts, but it's cool to see Masaya's back catalogue treated decently. I'd grab a Leynos re-release just for the convenience of recording runs, that game's RNG is a bitch and a half. Stop making me get up to press reset after ramming two stages' worth of infantry up my ass, you space cunts! :O

Oh wow, so assuming this is basically someone has the rights to Masaya's stuff - can we get a translated Leynos 2 wirh that stupid escort mission stripped out?

Very good news! Hoping they can bring some PC Engine stuff to market, as well. Lots of good Masaya PCE games that need more love, and more exposure.

Wow, they're hitting all the holes in my Mega Drive collection, this is convenient. After Gley Lancer turning out well, I'm in.

Someone convince me this is actually a good game. Every time I give it a chance, I get absolutely nothing from it.

Gynoug is solid but not spectacular, imo. A lot of the appeal is aesthetic, but while the boss designs are famously world-class, the stages and zako are kinda tame. Best feature is some of the faster-moving yet bullet-ridden hori shooting for 16bit. I recommend putting the difficulty one notch up, so bigger enemies live long enough to fire, but not to the point of Euroshumpy HP bloat. Some almost Sengoku Bladesque barrages to macro around from stage 2 onward. Gleylancer, TFIV, Eliminate Down, Whip Rush and Crying are all more entertaining and distinctive MD horis, Koutetsu Teikoku and Battle Mania Daiginjou are more interesting despite their pacing issues, and getting into ports, Hellfire schools it (and most of the aforementioned), too. Competent higher bullet-count hori with the minor boost of some outstanding boss pixels.

Gynoug is a nice game, but no amount of memery will make it a top 10. For me it always felt like it had no real gimmick. The subweapons seem underused and don't add much to the game, and beyond that the enemy patterns and formations aren't anything too interesting. Definitely a game you play to look at the art (bosses mainly) and to laugh at Dickman. TLDR it's worth playing but not by far.

If I'd have to recommend a single game for a Gynoug enthusiast I'd probably choose Gleylancer. In many ways it feels like a more complete take on the same formula.

It's worth the price for that title music alone..... that army-style drum pattern then when it all kicks in..... OOF.
Yeah, though it gets me in the nostalgia, it's competent at best. Stage 5 is a blast though.

While I agree that Gynoug's charm can mostly be found in the audio and the extraordinary visuals, that's by no means all it has going for it. The game actually features some nice proto-bullethell patterns that were quite unusual at the time, as was the comparably small player sprite. The gameplay is very solid, even though it only really picks up from stage 5 onwards, at least on default difficulty.

I hope this means Ratalaika produce a lot more cool-ass ports of old games.

That was a Sega published game, it's available right now on the Genesis Classics collection. With Sega AGES done I'm not sure it's much of a candidate for individual release currently.

Don’t you mean “hot off the heels”?

^ No, the idiom is "Hot on the heels," as though in a race where someone is right behind the heels of someone else.

This is one of those games I tried to get into and dropped off from. The stages need a bit more variety. Sometimes it feels like you aren't really progressing through the levels, you just fight waves of enemies until the boss. One of those little things, but it matters.

Oh. Guess I must have misheard the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare rap, then...

He does say hot off the heels. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare rap is the gospel, so it must be right. 'Nuff said. Stay frosty bros.

This is one Masaya game I could just never get into. The aesthetics are awful and the game never felt like much to write home about. I owned a copy several years ago, but just sold it not long after revisiting. I think I'll be passing on this one, even for the cheap price

Thanks for the tip! Forgot this was hidden in that collection! dl'd immediately.

Still would've like a stand alone with some nice qol additions, option to play "Crying" and better emulated sound!

Glad you were able to get it one way or another.

It's a shame that on a system known for shmups, that's the only entry on the collection in the classic style. They put junk like Super Thunderblade & Galaxy Force II on there, maybe thinking the more three dimensional perspective would appeal better to the current age?

What's the lag like on that Genesis Classics Collection? I can't find any definite figures online but the anecdotes don't sound good.

It feels like it is game to game. Most seemed decent, but with eSWAT it felt like I could take a bathroom break between pressing a button and something happening. This is on NSW.

I still prefer Gleylancer over this because this one is more fantasy-themed than sci-fi, not to mention it's a bit dreary and bleak for a shmup. Didn't this game also go under another name? "Wings of Wor", was it?

Ah well the sticky says otherwise!

MegaDrive / Genesis:
  • Biohazard Battle / Crying
Fire Shark / Same! Same! Same!
    Gleylancer
    Gynoug / Wings of War
    MUSHA Aleste
    Thunder Force 3
Thunder Force 4 (Lightening Force in the USA)
    Truxton / Tatsujin
Funny these are all on Switch ("sorta" for TF3), or coming soon, except Truxton (afaik?)

I'd throw Elemental Master in there too along with Segaia/Darius II MD, which is worth playing even if you've played the arcade version. It's almost like a directors cut (think Gradius III AC/SNES).

It seems a bit outdated. I'd definitely move gynoug and truxton out.

However it's worth noting that the the list isn't strictly in terms of gameplay, and more of an overall top 10. This would make Gynoug a perfectly viable candicate for the fantastic design direction alone.
