First to Tate?

Which console game was the first to incorperate a tate mode? I'm thinking probably a Saturn game but wouldn't be too surprised if tate made it's debut on an earlier system. I certainly don't remember anything like it in the megadrive.

Maybe the Vectrex back in 1982, the console came with a vertical CRT.

Ah yes, the Vectrex does, indeed, have a vertical (tate'd) black & white vector-based monitor. There was a color vector-based Vectrex prototype created but found to be too expensive to manufacture for general public release.
