How to "degauss" a Sony PVM to play vertical arcade games...

Post by AmintaShumps »

Hi all! I want to use my Sony PVM 2130QM to play vertical games in their TATE mode.

But, when I rotate it, it typically "gausses" and no matter how many time you wait to power on the monitor after rotating the "gauss" on upper right part (rotating clockwise) remains, as you can see from Amidar (in Mister Core) from pictures:

Now, I have a degauss coil I've bought many time ago and I've never used; however I don't know if I can use it with some sort of adaptor here in Italy - Europe because, as you can see, the connector is American:

What do you suggest?

My target is to play the vertical arcade games like my beloved Amidar... Please, if you believe that is not possible with this monitor, suggest me other 19-20-21" CRT that supports at the best the Tate mode!

Many thanks in advance,

I had a TV that I used to play TATE with that did this. To make look normal I had to face the screen in a particular direction (north for example) though I don't remember the direction exactly. Maybe the earth's magnetic field is interfering?

If your TV comes back to normal when untated then it's own degausser is probably working fine. I don't think an external degauss wand will help much. You can't use that American one on 220V anyway.

I never had any look with TATE monitors, always looked like yours. I don't think an internal or external degaussing coil would help, I always just assumed I had to adjust purity rings and maybe move some purity magnets on the tube as well. Was just never willing to commit a TV permanently as a TATE screen so I never tried.

Gaussing via NSEW direction and V/H orientation due to earths magnetic field is a real phenomenon that will happen every time. Its amazing that as many of us that had consumer CRTs back in the day, I really dont recall it being a problem while I see it on almost every CRT I fiddle with nowadays (and with the "Hitachi Heist", Ive been fiddling A LOT  ) Sometimes, it will eventually clear on its own over time after many degaussing pulses from powering on and off. You can also locate a permanent disc magnet near the outside edge of the problem area of the CRT and rotate the magnet until the colors clear. Once you get the position and orientation down, you can tape the magnet down in the orientation.

Another option you can try is moving the CRT forward/backward/side to side a bit. Some times the issue will clear itself if you reposition the set 6 inches one way or the other, even without NSEW rotation of the set. NSEW rotation of the set will definitely resolve the issue, but if its resolved with the set facing the wrong way that doesnt help, lol.
