Just bought an xbox

Post by Diabollokus »

Not a 360! Got one off ebay for mame and such decided to induldge in a bit of segas panzer dragoon orta, anything worth while on the system apart from halo? I bought ninja gaiden black to make up for completing god of war then chronicles of riddick and splinter cell chaos theory shall be accquired later. half life 2 doom and jsrf are possibilities

Any games must own status for the xbox? they're all like super cheap on ebay right now, whats to lose.

I don't know if this would be considered a "must own," but kingdom under fire is one experience that is quite unique for the xbox. It's maybe 2/3 dynasty warriors and 1/3 RTS, and while I normally hate RTS games and dynasty warriors, this one is pretty good. It gives a good selection of units and stuff, and the controls, while quite dense, works pretty well. Its major flaw is that the game was just too damn hard for me, because I really suck at RTSes and there is no mid mission save, so if you lose (which I did a lot), you will have to play it over again and again. Definitely a try before you buy, but a unique experience for the xbox.

One that is a must own that you haven't mentioned yet is KOTOR - probably the best RPG on the xbox, and it's not too long and has great replayability.

As for FPS games, there's a bunch, but if you got halo and halo 2, the others are basically the same thing. Having said that, I really did like Far Cry and, as you mentioned, chronicles of riddick.

Ninja Gaiden Black and Phantom Dust are amazing games that are worth owning an Xbox just to play. Check them out.

Get KOTOR, trust me that's a must-play RPG (better than any other game on the system). KOTOR 2 is good too, but I haven't had time to finish it yet and I hear the ending is rushed and lackluster.

Other good Xbox games: shiki 2 (JP only), psyvariar 2 (JP only), Outrun 2, Outrun 2006, Galaxy Angel (JP only), Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Black, House of the Dead 3, etc.

The XBox is what I use when I want to play fighting games, especially since most of my friends aren't into them anymore. The Live service has been indispensible, if occasionally frustrating.

If you're interested in playing fighting games online, I recommend Street Fighter Anniversary Collection for 3rd Strike, KOF 02/03 for KOF 03 (I don't like how 02 behaves online) and Samurai Shodown V. KOF Maniax plays well online, but reminds many of Killer Instinct.

Stay away from SVC Chaos. Dear god.

Of course, your connection could render all of the above null and void.

I got MAME installed on my xbox but it doesnt handle Cave and Psykio shmups very well. Older arcade games run good though.

for must own xbox games I would recommend KOTOR 1

Metal Slug 3
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Project Gotham Racing 2 (which includes Geometry Wars)
Street Fighter Anniversary
Halo 1 & 2
Rallisport Challenge 2
Taito Legends

that may be my entire collection atm. Last one I bought is the last one listed. Pretty good, but if you're like me you'll need a dpad. The Street Fighter dpad works well enough.

As for Xbox must have games,

Otogi 1 & 2
JSRF
Gunvalkerie
KOTOR

Racers-

Project Gotham Racing 2

Off Topic:
Did you know the XBox is so huge, it caused the extinction of the dinosaurs when it hit the Earth? Here's proof ^_-

On Topic:
If you can get your system import ready, you can get Shikigami no Shiro EX, Psyvariar 2, Shikigami 2 and so on, if you haven't already got them on another console. For domestic stuff, most of what people have listed is good - Panzer Orta, Outrun 2, Project Gotham etc - and affordable too.

-PGR 2
-Forza Motorsport
Midtown Madness 3

great racing games on Xbox:

PGR2
Colin McRae Rally 2005
Midnight Club 3
Toca 2+3

average racing games on Xbox:

World Racing 2 (the game itself is great, but the framerate´s just too bad)
Outrun 2
Flatout (the same comment as to WR2 applies)
Midway Arcade Treasures 3
PGR 1 (it´s excellent, but PGR 2 is just so much better)

overhyped crap on Xbox:

Forza
Jade Empire
Fable
Halo 1+2
JSRF
Rallisport Challenge 1+2
Panzer Dragoon Orta

Some games to play..

Forza-better than that overhyped pos franchise called Gran Turismo on ps2
The Halos-They're alright...
Ninja Gaiden-The DMC series falls flat on its face compared to this and God of War is just a poor substitute

Kotor-when you're through playing interactive japanese novels. This is the rpg you want to play.

Outrun 2, Rallisport Challenge 1+2, Project Gotham series=arcade racing done right.

Panzer Dragoon Orta-One of the best panzer dragoons out there
Otogi1+2= really good action games
Gunvalkyrie-really good action/arcade like game
Jet Set radio future- If you loved jet set radio, you'll like this one
Toca series- the best platform to play it on is the xbox
Splinter Cell series-Metal Gear Solid without the endless movies and stupid stories. Just pure gameplay here.

Buffy the vampire slayer-one of the best beatem ups released in years
DOA series- pretty good fighter compared to the tekken series
Steel Battalion/tekki- Good if you have the money

I'm sure there's more out there but that's all I can name off the top of my head.

GUNVALKYIRE - by far my favorite xbox game, a godly experience

JSRF - crazy unique game, gameplay of original is better though imho

PanzerDragoonOrta - as you already know, a must own masterpiece

Otogi1+2 - fairly basic in gameplay, but best art and music of all time

SteelBattalion - hefty price, but if you are into piloting mechs, fun times

PhantomCrash - style and mech customizing is good stuff, see how long you last arena type game

KingdomUnderFire - wicked sweet midieval game, hard to get used to but worth it

Yeah the 2 driving games I knew of were forza and PGR2, Loved metropois street racer I have a feeling PGR2 will appeal to me a bit more, want something with a bit less Gran turismo in it.

I've checked out some vids of otogi, looks fantastic definetly buying it, would have missed it unless I'd asked, cheap and by sega great combo.

Played JSRF a few years back, didn't get long on it but I've beaten the DC original and felt a bit lost in the Xbox game, aslong as theres some crazy levels with assassins on jet packs, golden rhinos and a great soundtrack its a must.

I thinks thats me sorted going to enjoy what I have for the moment, should tie me over for quite some time.

Cheers guys

Ignore the people who slate it and get HALO. The first one, not the sequel. For the price you'll be able to pick it up for, you can decide for yourself whether you like it or not; and, if you ignore what the 'love vs. hate' camps on the Net say and just judge by playing, you'll find that it's a rather enjoyable game. :)

true that about Final Burn...the only reason I still have MAME is for the rest of the games that FBA doesn't support.....I love FBA...

Yes but I heard the X-box port wasn't so great,But it is allot more convient than getting one of those super PC's.

Oversimplified mini-review: It's like if you took Sonic Adventure/Xenosaga, but replaced the cutscenes with loadtimes, even on PC.

All the stuff I like has been listed. Still need to try Crimson Skies and Mech Assault.
Of course, your connection could render all of the above null and void.
Still the best 3rd Strike port, online or no. Someday I'll get good at Third Strike and be able to tell you the specifics...

Congrats on your purchase. Even though it seems that M$ considers the Xbox dead, just because a system is out of date doesn't mean that it's no good anymore.

If you like FPS and racing games, the Xbox is right up your alley. I highly recommend Forza if you are a Gran Turismo type person. Also, the Xbox gets the best multiplatform games.
