PS2 rattling noise - help?

Post by ubersaurus »

So I've got an early JP PS2 model SCPH-10000 that I recently replaced the laser on. The old one was worn out, didn't want to read anything anymore, etc. and the new one is working fine now that I've moved over the height adjustment screw and used a micrometer to align it with how the old one was. Pretty much all the games I own (save for Thunderforce VI) are loading quickly and perfectly, so I decided to splurge and pick up a copy of Espgaluda. That arrived yesterday, but the damn thing won't boot. Instead, the PS2 is doing this rattling noise when it's trying to read the disc and it never comes up:

It sounds mechanical, like there's an issue with the arm attached to the worm drive. I've regreased all worm drive and the arms the laser rests on to see if that would help, and it didn't change anything. I can get the disc to read on my computer's DVD drive, so I'm assuming it's not an issue there. Not really sure what the next step would be. Anyone with experience on PS2s who may be able to help?

Edit: I adjusted the laser arm and that took care of the rattling, though Espgaluda still won't read. Ugh.

This sounds like a hack, but it worked after all else failed for me during my rehabilitation effort. Use a piece of duct tape cut out in the shape on the driver's top disc holder (the white magnetic piece that is slotted in the top cover of the drive). This was the only thing that got my blue disc games booting reliably.

I used gaffer's tape but any strong duct tape type product should work. You can trace a nickel to get the shape down. Hope this helps.
