I wish I could stop fucking up the final boss' spellcards so I could get a good boost on my score. Oh well, I took benj's spot for #3 anyways.
ArrogantBastard - 1,282,289,230 - C - Reimu & Yukari - 0.62%

Edit: I've uploaded my replay file as well... Sorry for the piss-poor handling of my character or stupid deaths. I hate using my PSX pad.

Had to reinstall this to reclaim my spot from AB. Nice to see that the little skill I have didn't totally decline during the months I didn't touch this game.
benj - 1,322,378,060 - Cb - Marisa & Alice - 0.37%
(Just for the record: Played with a N64 controller.)

You should check out shrinemaiden.com and the touhou wiki. They have all the information you need. But in a nutshell: Stay unfocused as much as possible (Only focus to kill off masters without destroying their slaves.), and don't screw up spellcards.Arznei wrote:Can someone tell me what the secret is to high scoring? I think it's because of the time orbs you get from shooting enemies in unfocused/human mode. If your gauge(bottom left) is exceeding +80%(might differ from team to team not to sure about that) you get time points for shooting enemies if you get -80% in focused/youkai mode you will get time orbs for grazing bullets.Arznei wrote:I have read the tutorial and stuff. Though the most important score part is try to collect all items on the top of the screen the higher the place is where you get the item the more is it worth. If the color of the text that appears next to the collected item is red it means you get nearly no points for it, white color you get a few points and golden means you get the most points.
Taco Pirates!
Because collecting time orbs is one of the most important factors of scoring. You get time orbs for shooting enemies when you're below -80% and for grazing bullets when you're above +80%. Especially on Easy you'll be spending a lot more time shooting enemies than grazing bullets. Point items are worth twice the amount of points when collected and you'll get more points for grazing bullets while you're below -80%.
What you should do is stay unfocused until an enemy that releases slaves enters the screen, stop shooting for a bit so you don't kill it or its slaves, kill it while you're focused, and then unfocus BEFORE the time orbs released by the slaves reach you. The same tactic applies to bosses. However for the bosses of stage 5 and 6 you might wanna reverse this tactic. Unless you are really good you should stay focused to make dodging bullets easier, therefore it's probably better to stay above +80% all the time during the fight, so you don't fuck up the end of level bonus.

If you want to score high you'll want to use it as little as possible in most cases, since the time points (aka little orb-ish thingies) you'll get from shooting enemies (in unfocused mode) will probably be greater than what you would get by grazing bullets (in focused mode). Of course, if it's a pattern you're having trouble with, you might want to go for the higher damage and more precise control of focusing, while grazing some bullets to get at least a few time points, but ideally you'll want to focus relatively little. As was said earlier, though, when you encounter an enemy who deploys the transparent "slave" circles, you'll score best by using "focused" shots to destroy the enemy without damaging the "slaves," so that they all cancel out into clusters of time points when their creator is destroyed.Arznei wrote:I am totally confused. Do I use slow or not?
Are you using Youmu/Yuyuko? Her "human" side only goes up partway (I forget whether its maximum is 50 or 80)...that's actually an advantage though, since once her meter is at her (lower) maximum, she still gets the max point value for the point items, while the other characters would have to work their meters all the way up to 100 percent to do that.If I defeat bosses without slow, it's only -50%.
