Patching DDP:DOJ (PS2) for BL?

Post by —dash »

How feasible would it be to create a patch for DOJ (PS2) to include BL? I recently softmodded my PS2 and this would be a fantastic to play BL on a CRT considering the PGM's are so inaccessible. I'd get a Brook Retro Board solely to experience that in 240p on a tate CRT.

It seems like a cool port except for the fact that its only WL.

Insanely hard, bordering on impossible. It would likely be easier to start from scratch than trying to bolt BL into what Arika already built. The PS2 is notoriously challenging to work with, so you'd need very specialized coding knowledge to even attempt it. Just look at the janky ports of Mushi and Ibara (not to mention dreck like GW Generations) and you can see how many devs DURING the era, doing their best, struggled to achieve Arika's top-tier quality.

It's not a perfect port, but your best bet is to just get BL on the 360 if you want a console/crt experience from that game.

Spoiler
Hacked pgm carts and pgm motherboards should still be around if that's a route you're interested in?... It's probably x3 the cost of a Ps2 hdloader but if you're after doj bl specifically (+/- ketsui.. IMHO the 2 best cave games) its a pretty great deal.
... I'm an idiot - totally overlooked the idea you probably didn't have supergun....

If you're after something a bit more general to feed your crt I'd def consider the mame/amd route via driver hack:

... There are the arcadevgas which are a bit more simple, but despite purchasing one ages ago I never put it to use  ... Perhaps time to finally get round to that, always wondered if I could have it in a multi gpu machine...

With a 360 you'll still want an emotia or similar to squash down to 240p if crt is your goal... This used to be my goto but unfortunately I imagine pretty rare these days...

Not really possible. The ps2 version is a port, so the original source code and assets are required.

I say skip the hassle and play it in mame/fbn with a good edge enhancing shader + crt shader and it'll look and play just as good on the crt, and possibly even better, even on a modern display.

My understanding is that BL is mostly a rebalancing, so things like tweaked enemy patterns, hitboxes, chaining criteria etc. I would expect this would all be in data files, so if someone with the knowledge took the time to look into it, it could theoretically be possible, though certainly not trivial. Plus you could easily change something that the engine can't handle, then it gets far more complicated. It's highly unlikely to happen.

That's too bad. I hadn't realized how difficult the PS2 is to work with. That explains how few ROM hacks there are for the system compared to something like the SNES. On the bright side, PGM's aren't as inaccessible as I had thought, and I may look into getting one for DOJ and Ketsui.

I have PS2 DOJ and it's a lovely port but honestly, just go with MAME.

I think if this were possible they wouldn't have been sold as separate PCBs. WL and BL are pretty different games.

Black Label has White Label in it, dude.

This is doable but a lot of work for a nearly worthless payoff, considering other solutions exist.

If you just want to play BL on a CRT, GroovyMAME with some filters/CRT-oriented settings would solve your problem.

I think everyone here is right, you can probably just use an old i3/Core 2 DUO computer with any compatible CRT/VGA card and play it through mame.

Or you could play the 360 version.

It is totally possible but I don't think anyone is willing to do such thing as of now.
