Only translations. In fact as a general rule, once arcade games switched towards modular systems like Neo Geo, Taito F3, etc. over traditional PCBs unique to every game, and started favoring software-based service menus over hardware-based DIP switch control, developers tended to stop putting effort into meaningful differences across regions.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I always thought it had more to do with the US distributors becoming more mature with the time (not enough to stop censoring blood and sexual jokes till the end, though.)

I'm not sure if it actually had anything directly to do with modular hardware and service menus or if it's merely correlated with their adoption, but that's the observable trend anyway.
