Is this MX4000 faulty?

Hey all. Picked up an MX4000 from eBay, it’s my 3rd Beovision now but the other two are elsewhere and not available for comparison. I’ve hooked up a Japanese MD1 via scart, and getting some weird banding. Anyone know what this is/how to fix?






The actual image when surrounded seems fine (see closeup of sprite) but any time there is pixel followed by empty space, we get banding.
