Why is the PC gaming cost vs console cost stupid? Yes, PCs do a lot more than a console, but then again, the only reason you need new parts anymore is basically for games. And those parts cost more than getting any console because the PC hardware makers can't subsidize the cost of the hardware with software sales, unlike console makers. And, taking that argument out, PCs play games; if you want to play them, you're going to fork over a lot more money, plain and simple.
It is stupid because of my later argument for the most part. If there was an upgradeable console that could stay with the times, and upgrade it's graphics capabilities, then it would be no different than a computer pricewise. The only argument about having to upgrade is that the games coming out are better quality than before. Instead of having to upgrade your ENTIRE console to play these new/more powerful games, you can upgrade certain parts for cheaper in order to play them. As it is now, I have more processing speed, more RAM, and more video graphics memory than any console out there. If I want to, I can keep it this way, and it will STILL be more powerful than the current (2006 release, and earlier) consoles in all those ways in ten years without costing me a dime. Basically, what I'm saying is there is no difference between upgrading your pc, and buying the next console. You only do it when you want the "next gen" stuff.

1) The cost of PC gaming is indeed exaggerated by the naysayers. Yes, there is a need to upgrade, but as has been said here, there is no need to always be on the absolute bleeding edge. Consider also that after the first few years of a console generation, even midrange to "budget" PC hardware has the capability to outperform the current consoles.

2) I don't understand the bitterness directed at the cost of PC gaming. It's a different market. The pricing and options exist because the fanbase here enjoys the tinkering and the ability to continually one-up what was previously the best. High-end hardware brings genuine joy to tech-heads, even with the high cost. If you don't fall into this demographic, fine. It doesn't bring you that joy, so you don't spend your money on it. But why the disdain for another niche within the hobby?

He said "graphics card," I replied to graphics card. Console gamers act like the $600 cards are the only ones worth a damn and the others will just rape your father while he sleeps.
Those are just Nintendo fanboys. The real problem is in finding a graphics card with cooperates with your processor which won't stall your fps. The problem with PC gaming is generally if you upgrade to some fancy new graphics card, the rest of your computer needs to follow.

There is a real solution to this pc vs. console debate. Be like me - and buy them ALL. 8)

Don't be lazy - go get a job and work your butt off to get lotsa money, and spend it on video game stuff after paying your bills. :)

The problem with having a job is that you have less time to play games.

my thing is not so much the price of pc gaming that irks me but the games these cats are playing that seems to warrant having a mega$$$ superpowered machine.
I mean, I hate RTS and roleplaying games and sims. FPS's are cool if we're talking counterstrike or something along those lines like Day of Defeat or whatever. Why the hell do people spend so much money for such shitty game selections. I mean, do you really need that 500$ video card to fucking play Civilization and Rome total war? And don't get me started on WoW. Why people still continue to pump money into that bullshit is beyond me. I mean, much of our time is spent doing nothing that merits a monthly subscription.
It seems like I get more gameplay out of MAME/Final Burn/NeoRageX and GCN and PS2 than most folks are getting out of a super$$$$$ PC setup.
But hey, do you....

And most PC gamers do not hate these genres. There's your explanation.
