shmups has hurt me physically

Post by 1up »

Been playing various shmups for 3 hours straight today. Now about 30mins after my session my lower arms are hurting like mad. I work out regularly and play all kinds of games regularly, so what gives?

guess im putting a lot of strain on my lower arms bashing the fire button like mad :D

30mm Acrade style buttons and placing the controler on a scured surface does help :o , but I think you should learn to use the auto fire button.

Game pad are bad for continueous button tapping. You couldn't tap fast and it hurts after a while. :? So use auto fire when you use pad.

So games actually don't require you to tapping like mad  , e.g. all Cave's game. In these games you shoot mutiple shoots after you tap once. Even you tap in a very slow place you still got continueous fire. You could manually tapping the fire buttons in these games. :o

In only other case you should use manual fire is in games like 1942, which the rate of fire is so slow that (Limited 2 to 6 on screen shoots) you have to control the rate of fire so that you won't caught no shoot to fire in critical moment.

Tapping buttons like mad really hurt your hand, some members actually got horror stories to tell... :x

tried to play Strikers 1945 and Dragon Blaze on my xbox but the box couldnt handle the action. it started flickering and slowing down so I went to my laptop. Lying on my back on the couch might not have been the best position for playing shmups but at the time I was VERY comfortable :D

I also noticed that when I just pick up and play I can get further than if I try and beat the shmups.com hi-scores

Not to discount your pain, but I have to laugh because this reminds me of my wife. She used to play Diablo 2 for hours on end & then her right arm would hurt really bad after that because it was stuck on the mouse in the same position for so long. She dubbed it "Diablo Arm".

hehe maybe this is the lower arm shmups syndrome?? hehe

I think its because I was lying down with my lower arms resting on the edge of my laptop ABOVE my heart. That means bad circulation to the arms/hands and more tention in the lower arms because the full weight is rested on the edge of the laptop.

Better get that X-Arcade controller soon, so I can play in a better position 8)

You might want to strengthen your forearms by rigorous forearm training such as masturbation.

...

I haven't got wrist pain or anything yet, but I do notice that if I play about 20 minutes of Parsec47 on a keyboard, my left hand's cold and my right hand's hot. It's not uncomfortable, and I don't really notice it in other shmups. Obviously, Parsec47 encourages a lot more movement than most games.

Only when you're not squeezing hard enough. They call it the "Popeye".

Or so I've been told.

pads -> try to rest the pad between your legs/onyour lap or at least rest you arms on your legs/side of your rump.

joysticks and cabs -> I guess alot has to do with the angle of the joystick plate/control panel so one could try to have a lower or higher seat.

When I play, every muscle in my body is tense. When I am dodging, I shift and jerk around in my seat. I get a mother-fucking work out playing shooters.

I use a gamepad for al my games and after a 2 hours of intense playing my hands become stiff and cramped. I'd then wash my hands under warm water and massage them for 5 minutes. After that my hands feel loose are good for another 2 hours.

Squats, deadlift and bench press man :D jk

Keyboards kill mine, those little foam wrist rest things help alot, I take it your playing on an arcade stick so not much help, we should do a poll for medical research on shmupos what hurts more

sitting down with stick/pad
standing up at a cab or elevated controller
keyboard......
