Shmup/gaming setups

Post by Eyvah_Ehyeh »

Yes, one of those threads! I'm sure there's been several, but I've been gone a while and I'm curious how yours look. I recently acquired a gaming computer with a g-sync compatible 27 inch 144hz screen with 3.5ms input lag at Native Resolution and 8.3ms input lag at 60Hz, and the screen I got specifically because I wanted to play shmups with low latency and smoothness (which I'm still not sure I'm doing optimally if I'm being honest, because I'm not very savvy when it comes to tech, so I just play in the native resolution and with a 144hz refresh rate).

What works best for me when playing shmups when it comes to the physical setup is basically what you can see pictured here, which is a leaning-forward approach quite close to the screen. Shout-out to fellow pillow user gusto!

I use the retro 8-bit mega drive controller when playing shmups, and quite often, especially toward the evenings, I use tinted gaming glasses from Gunnar because they reduce eye-strain more than say flux that just removes the blue colors of the screen.

This is mine-

It's an old computer desk with a pretty basic i3-6100 (GT 1030 + 8GB ram) underneath it for emulation. I got a Dell 4:3 1600x1200 monitor that I modded to rotate anticlockwise so I can play shmups with the screen vertical. Xbox 360 wheel and SF4 TE stick for controls but I also use a Retro-Bit Saturn pad for fighting games because the stick's set up tight for shmups (and I grew up on SF2 on the SNES!) I've got a modded 360 downstairs too but this is my main retro game/shmup setup.

It's nice, I set Retroarch to integer scale so there's no blurring (that I can see anyway) and although 480p Dreamcast games run with black borders because of the integer scaling they look ace.

Wow, non widescreen - old school! :D

Huh, my shmuparch wasn't set to integer scale, so might try it out.

It's pretty cool and seems to work well for vertical shmups, they fill the screen with no blurring and 2D fighters look great as well - nice sharp edges on the pixels so I can see exactly how crap I am

I invested in a TATEable setup to compensate for my complete suckage in shmupping.

This is my retro console setup. I've added a 360 now which can connect to either CRT. Both 4:3 with RGB SCART. The rotated one is a 21", the hori is 25", maybe bigger. That's an RGB SCART switch to the right of the rotated TV beneath the PS2s.
