Wow... God save any gamer that listens to your opinions.
Yeah, I know. He left out Shippu Mahou and Layer Section.
Today i cant appreciate Megadrive with its, in my opinion, poor soundchip, and very thin colorpalette.
Go with a Dreamcast then. Saturn's color palette and soundchips totally suck in comparison.

I was gonna say.

And most Dreamcast shmups are also on the PS2. There are a few exclusives (Ikaruga, Border Down, ...). Maybe someone who knows can post a list of all DC-only shmups.

That's why I said Saturn. :o

Here is the list of Shmups that are avaliable on DC but not PS2:

Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh
Border Down
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Ikaruga
Mars Matrix
Gun Spike
Under Defeat
Zero Gunner 2
(Mainly Takumi, Treasure & G.Rev. games.)

Only 9 games, that's ALL of them. :o Not to mension Bakuretsu Muteki Bangaioh & Gun Spike are just borderliners. :)

So my advice is: Get a Saturn.
(Unless you wish to play Virtual On VOOT, that's another story. )

I don't know how you are on the whole "quantity vs. quality" bag, but I vote DC for some simply solid shmups. Yeah, it's a short list, but I love the crap out of my DC games, vs the other systems that I have alot more games for and seldom play.

Well, the official Game pad is really not very good. But if you could find a lengendary ASCII DreamCast Fighting Pad, it is another story. :o
Or the official arcade stick. Particularly with some replacement parts thrown in there. ;)

it´s really a tough choice, once the PS2´s biggest pie is cut out, Dreamcast and Saturn are very much on par with each other. I´d say make your choice dependant on what you like most on PS2. If it´s mainly newer games (the Cave stuff, Psyvariar, Shikigami, the works), go with a Dreamcast. But if you prefer what you found on Taito & Psikyo Collections, go with a Saturn. Quite a few games that are availlable on PS2 are better on Saturn, especially if you´re playing in tate.

The Saturn and DC are my two favourite consoles, so I wouldn't be able to do without either. I even have three of each, just in case one or two fail eventually. :)

I'd say go for used conoles in the best condition you can find, and you'll be able to pick up one of each for less than you're looking at spending.

Im not hesitant just for the sake of money. I could probably afford both consoles, but where would i put them? While i live in a small house with wife and kid, theres not much space for my videogames and all its accessories.
Im deported to the bedroom with a 20" rgb monitor. These so called "collectors" must be masters in persuasion, because my wife would never let me use an entire room for videogames.

A third choice to this dilemma could be to wait for the next generation and see what that bring to the shooter- scene.
If my money starts burning in my pocket im going for a Dreamcast.

I doubt the next gen is going to bring in much as far as shmups go. Maybe Xbox Live Arcade and the Virtual Console on the Wii might be a good place for some Genesis/NES/SNES/PC-Engine classics... but other than that...

I'd say good decision on the DC. What it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality! And unlike the Saturn the best games (aside from Border Down) aren't going to be too hard or expensive to acquire.

If space is the issue, you could stack the consoles. I did that with some very cheesy racks from Target. Deciding between DC or Saturn (or Genesis or TG16) will just come down to what kind of games you dig.

Saturn vote (though I have much love for DC as shmup plat)

But those prices for the new consoles hurt my eyes (and my sensibilities)

you are clearly not alone feeling that, others have stated the same. I will do my best to find a better price, but i am looking within the borders of Sweden mind you.

Just the fact that you are buying within Sweden I suppose justifies a bit of that cost...(apprehensively agrees)

As to where to put all the stuff---you should see my drawers and closets  . Here's some pics of my room before it was cleaned

and the consoles are all hiding in drawers~! not enough room for all my crap

PS I am proud of my popeye/mickey mouse sheets

I'd say the Saturn has a bigger library of interesting stuff. But the bottom line is, both systems have their share of truly class-A shmups available, so whichever one you go with for now, you won't regret it. Then you can just get the other one later on when you are ready.

My vote goes to the Saturn because it just has so much more shooters than the DC.
But for you personally I would just make a decision about the games I would want to play and then get the system that has the most games of those.
That way you'll be entertained longer and at the same time can save for the other console. Maybe also taking some persuasion class for your wife ;)
