Especially the fact that players won't be the owners of the physical games they buy seems rather strange.
Could be another storm in a glass of water though and it's not confirmed so for take it with a grain of salt. But what if it is true? Kinda consumer unfriendly move I think.
Also not sure wether they could effectively do this and whether local laws would prevent them from doing so...
Well, they could make it illegal for the 2nd hand buyers to actually play the game, but I think it is still legal for us to buy and sell the game disc.
I could be wrong, since I am not a legal expart.

This has been tried many times in many industries by many companies and as far as I can recall, it's never succeeded. EULAs are tenuous at best (a contract you can only view after purchasing and opening the product typically doesn't hold up well in court) and neither customers nor retailers give a shit about them.
As for the hardware thing, Sony could do it I guess, but they have to know that it would basically kill them in America. Not sure about other regions, but I'm sure it wouldn't go over well with them either.

Yes, I had been thinking they might require you to registered the game online via your PS3 to get the license code. Once registered the same disc couldn't be use on another PS3.
But what if my PS3 broke down, am I lossing my entire game collection. On a second thought, I don't think they would do this.

EDIT: According to the article, Sony has officially denied the rumor that the games will be branded to particular consoles, and therefore cannot be resold.
...perhaps this was all a sneaky ploy by Microsoft!

If they do that, and I don't put it past them, they will go down in flames. The system costs too much and to screw their fans and not give us a way to get games cheaper for it will kill them.
I am a huge gamer and I already decided not to get one. At least not untill it's a lot cheaper. I am getting married soon and we plan to start a faimly, I cant aford $600 + 200 for games controllers, etc, she would kill me, lol (she plays games too). Sony acually have me concidering a 360 although I really don't like the game lineup much.
I am definally getting a Wii on launch though, I trust Nintendo's systems not to bresk down. I like the games I have seen and a new way to play has me excited. It ias so much going for it and for the price (hopefully $200-$250) I can get the system, a Wiimote, and 2 classic controllers and a few games (inc Super Monkey Ball for the fiancee.) for the $400+ I have set aside for it.

Postman (Ya, thats right, Postman)
1. PS3 games won't brand themselves to particular consoles.
2. Used PS3 games may be sold.
3. Used PS3 games will work on your PS3.
Sony have, however, not stated anything concerning arrangements for stores that want to sell BOTH used PS3 games AND PS3 hardware or new PS3 games. It wouldn't surprise me if terms of retailers' contracts to sell the PS3 included no extensive pre-owned sections, as are commonplace now.
I don't think retailers would be eager to agree with something like that. It sounds like a risky move on Sony's part... what if the retailers say, "Fine, we'll just keep carrying the 360 and the Wii and not your products. Wal Mart's got a big consumer base, I bet you won't even miss us"?
Of course, it might be that Wal Mart has the kind of consumer base that would allow Sony to give the finger to the dedicated game shops. Just because I've never bought a game at Wal Mart, doesn't mean that the average gamer hasn't, either.

Outrageous price tag? Strike two!
Unable to play used games? Strike three!
And two of those aren't even happening. The boomerang controller got ditched in favour of Dual Shock's latest incarnation (without the shock, ironically) and it's already been stated that the PS3 will be perfectly capable of playing used games.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

It doesn't.
Well. To clarify... it does have the kind of userbase to support Sony. What it doesn't have is the kind of userbase to support anything approaching niche, which means that without the prospect of selling those games, small publishers probably won't stick with Sony. Without the small publishers, Sony loses a lot of their clout... none of them sell a lot of units individually, but combined they're a major force Sony doesn't want to lose.
You know, I almost hope they do it. This is exactly the type of anti-consumer policy they have pursued for... as long as I can remember. Only now, with the ridiculous price of the system and possibly the financial stability of the entire company riding on said system, their arrogance might finally bring them down. I would like to see this blow up in their face.
Not being able to sell used games isn't a new thing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there some right wherein stores/shops in England/UK cannot by law sell used games?
We'll see at the end of 2007 (just a year after launch, still a young console) how many of the people who now claim they will "never" buy a PS3... will actually own one

I was rather inclined to own one, especially after hearing that it was region free. When I learned about its price tag, the seeds of doubt were cast... then, that article was poured on them.
It's not just the sort of thing that would keep me from buying a PS3, it's downright outrageous. I'd like to OWN my games. If I can't own them, then I'm not interested. One of the reasons I bought a console to begin with was so that I wouldn't have to pump coins into a machine in order to play a video game.

I don't see many people saying they will 'never' own one. I do however see a LOT of people saying they will not own one until there is a significant price drop.

and you know, buying a system asap and wait for getting it at $5 on ebay is the commercial difference between the Gameboy and Lynx.
