Shmups magazine in English?

Post by shmupsrocks »

I find myself more and more interested in reading about these games in print magazines. It looks like they are written up in various Japanese language mags but anything in English?

Is Retro Gamer magazine as close as I'll get here? If so any suggestions for good shmups issues? I have the Arcade Classics issue and Shoot-Em-Ups issue.

Hardcoregaming101 have printed versions of their content that are available on Amazon.

Of course the desirability of that depends on what you think of their website content.

eg.

Yep I have both of the HG101 books.

I have an issue of Shooting Gameside and it's incredible... except I can't read a word.

Don't think it did - it would be nice if we could all put something together. I have written articles, fiction, 'stuff for work' - but I have never actually designed a lay out as yet.

I've tried it with a few things (the app and camera on my phone). Its pretty clumsy, better than nothing but you won't be reading a whole magazine that way. It works best with small chunks of text. For example I had good luck recently with old japanese hifi catalogs. I wanted to read the description for one product so like half a page of text.

Arcade mania comes to mind. A small sized book that is sort of a collection of magazine articles divided in chapters about various arcade genres (shooting, fighting, crane games, etc). About 30 pages of shmup contents. Quite a lot of photos, some color, some b&w. Got mixed reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/396 ... cade-mania

I'm a bit confused by HG101's books. I have the shootemup vol.1 book. I don't really see a theme in that book it seems like just a random collection of shmups but it covers a decent number of titles. Then the second volume reduces the number of titles covered and focuses only on Namco games. Then there is a Konami shmups book but that isn't part of the shootemup series?

I think there is some space for someone to release a proper encyclopedia with versions released, differences between releases, how-to, tips, screenshots, etc. I have a few books that cover nes, snes, and sfc games which are pretty nice.

Someone else was thinking of doing something similar. But no updates from him yet (at least not on here).

Arcade Mania looks cool. Going to give that a try.

Is there a volume 2? I have volume 1 and the Konami one but I can't find any reference to volume 2.

These Retro Gamer issues have a shmup on the cover (there may be others):

21: R-Type
34: Xevious
72: Gradius
80: Axelay
123: Salamander
144: 1942

These may have a shmup review but I can't confirm:

93: Deathsmiles
110: Under Defeat HD
178: Strikers 1945

88 is supposed to have a great article on Cave.

Anyone know of others? There are supposed to be Battle Garegga, Twinkle Star Sprites, and 19XX articles somewhere.

Do the various arcade-themed Retro Gamer issues all have the same content?

A guy on instagram has made some epic shmup fanzines, his handle is marty_dyr and there's a link in his bio, you can read them for free online or buy a paper copies! He's really put a lot of effort into them and deserves a plug!

This is a great idea! Only I am not sure that for such a volume of work, the labor of one person will be enough. This requires a whole team of motivated people.

That's good to see and I shall look forward to it. I may be in the minority here but I like Shmup related literature and books - I even have Shmup game development books from Japan hanging around here :)

It would be amazing to see a magazine with each issue focusing on one shmup. 10 pages? 5 pages? I'll take it. magcloud.com would be great for this.

Yeah, I have vol 1 (and some of the other HG101 books) and will be gripping vol 2. They make good bathroom material.

Where exactly do you find these editions? Is it somewhere online or do you order from specialty stores?

Vol 1 was on Amazon last I checked and it looks like Vol 2 isn't out yet. HG101 has a Konami shmups book as well.
