Original Xbox Screen Flickering

Post by excalibur »

So I have this strange issue happening, I have an Original Xbox connected to my 4KTV (Sony X950H) using the Kaico Xbox HDMI adapter, when i try to use the Xbox the screen keeps flickering on and off constantly, and its unplayable, the strange part is it's not the adapter that's causing the issue i don't think, because i recently purchased this 4K TV and on my old LG 1080p TV, it worked without issue, with the exact same setup. I've tried several different things to try and solve the issue and am having no luck, does anyone know what the issue might be and how i can go about resolving it. Also this is an NTSC Xbox if that matters.

Thanks.

If it worked fine with your old TV, it sounds like there's something about the signal that the new TV isn't liking. Have you tried many different games on the new TV? I'd suggest trying some games that specifically output only 480p or only 720p, 1080i, etc... See if the TV works better with different resolutions, Or maybe go into the XBox dashboard and set the console to only output 480p, specifically, and see if it changes the TV's behavior.

I've tried a few different games but It does it on the dashboard too, i even forced the dashboard into 480p by holding both triggers and both sticks down at the same time and it still does it, i am perplexed as to whats causing this, I'm guessing its something about the TV, I've played around with the TV settings and such but no luck so far. I'm hoping i can find a fix, or at least some sort of alternative that will work.

If it worked on the old TV without ever having an issue, I'd say it's definitely something weird with the new TV. Have you tried all of the HDMI ports on your TV? Perhaps some of the ports function differently with the adapter. This is certainly the case with newer TVs that support 4k/120hz, eARC functions, etc... Also, some TVs let you go into their settings and rename or label certain HDMI inputs as "PC" which on some models helps with weird video signals, etc...

Sadly, that doesn't help here, was really hoping labeling the input to PC would do it. I've also tried swapping it to various HDMi ports including the eARC port.

Yeah, for whatever reason, sounds like the TV doesn't like the way the adapter functions, kind of how some older HDTVs won't play nice with the OSSC.

Yeah, seems that way. I was hoping there was something i was missing, might have to look into another way to hook up the Xbox to this TV and hope it doesn't have the same issues as this adapter, though i do also have an n64 and ps2 hooked up with RAD2X adapters from Retro Gaming Cables and a GameCube hooked up with a Carby, and they seem to work fine on the new TV. It doesn't make sense because those adapters are displaying at 480p as well, unless it's something specific to the Xbox on the Sony TV.

For reference here is a short video i uploaded, showing the issue I'm having. It does this both on the dashboard and in game.
