The Earth Defend

Post by Jac2Mac »

Hey guys!

Here is my opinion of a mega-rare game for Sega Genesis that is unlicensed I won on E-Bay about a year ago called The Earth Defend from Realtec also known as Earth Defense (Not to be confused with Earth Defense Force). I thought the music was pretty good and the graphics were excellent especially the robot at the end of the game. The gameplay was hilariously cheesy and played a lot like some of the Sachen shooters for NES and it had some cool bosses like the last robot. I think that more people should try to play this game and have a good time.

Just so you know, if you think Earth Defend is good, you should pretty much try EVERY OTHER SHMUP in the entire library. :P

I've been saying the exact same thing about Kato & Ken for years!

Has anyone else ever heard or seen this mega-rare game called The Earth Defend and does anyone know who made this game!

It was made by a company called "Realtec" & was distributed in limited quantities, from what I've been able to determine. I bought a boxed copy a few years ago just to have it in my collection. The box & manual say "Earth Defense" whereas the cart sticker says "The Earth Defend". It's really a pathetic shmup - right up there with Divine Sealing in terms of quality. It's okay for a few minutes - then you realize how many thousands of shots it takes to bring down a boss (and the cheapness of their attack patterns) and you'll quickly realize how much the game sucks.

Personally, I'm proud to have it in my collection as a collector piece - an interesting game that suffered (in the manual) from bad translation & a poor layout, & a game that probably didn't deserve to ever have a US release (when WAY better games like Eliminate Down or Gleylancer did). For serious shmup collectors or Genesis collectors only.

You actually thought it was OK for a few minutes?

And I could be totally wrong but I'm not sure it ever had a release outside the US...at least I've never seen any copies floating around besides the one that could be found at a few US stores for $20 back in the early 90's.

I have to correct my prior statement - the box & cart sticker say "Earth Defense" while the manual says "The Earth Defend" instead. Also, I just found this on eBay & Amazon:

http://cgi.ebay.com/EARTH-DEFENSE-SEGA- ... dZViewItem

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/ ... oding=UTF8

So if anybody here wants to be another proud owner of "The Earth Defend" here's your chance!

Here's a review I found of the game that is apparently from the All Game Guide:

http://www.answers.com/topic/earth-defense

I can't believe they didn't think the game totally sucked...

At least Digital Press agrees with me:

http://www.digitpress.com/reviews/earthdefense.htm

This site actually thinks a boxed copy is worth $30 (scroll down if you don't believe me!)...

http://www.morevideogames.com/genesis.htm

Seriously, I paid only $5 off the shelf (box, manual, & all) when I saw it because I knew that I could easily waste $5 on this dreck & not feel too bad about it the next day. After I played it, I felt cheated, as if I should have only spent $2, if only to cover the cost of what the retailer I bought it from probably lost on the deal when they agreed to take it on a trade-in.

That's an absolute classic! Even the butchered US Version (J.J. and Jeff) is enjoyable.

Not to resurrect an old topic for no reason, but I wrote a write-up on this game for the "Review A Bad Game Day" celebration yesterday. Hope somebody enjoys reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it :)
