The Quest for S-Video
The Quest for S-Video
With MISTER and Rpi4 getting pretty playable I was wondering what would be good options in getting those to output s-video.
For Mister I've ordered a MAVster, but for rpi4 my Retrotink Ultimate only outputs black and white. Does anyone have any suggestions for Rgbs to s-Video?

Re: The Quest for S-Video
You could probably use a Jrok encoder. Or you could try to build the Russian one on eBay. There are a few options:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Encoder-RGB-co ... SwNaBdJ4SY
http://www.jrok.com/hardware/RGB.html
https://www.ebay.com/itm/RGB-to-S-VIDEO ... SwpqJf7xqt
Also LinuxBot3000 makes an RGB to SVideo and composite encoder. He doesn't have any for sale at the moment on his eBay store, but if you send him an eBay message he might make one for you. He once offered to build an out-of-stock item for me that I had inquired about. He makes the best transcoders in my opinion, and with nice housings and USB-C power.
Another thing to maybe consider, and certainly what I would do in your situation, is to use the inbuilt composite video of the RPi. Pis have the sharpest, cleanest composite that I have ever seen. It is about on par with SVideo in my opinion.
There may even be more options to explore, if you would let my know why you specifically want SVideo and what sort of display you will be using.

Re: The Quest for S-Video
My experience with the composite on my pi2 was that it was really terrible quality. Some of the softest I've ever seen.

I have a second 17" model now. S video looks pretty clean on these 800 line monitors. I have color matched my apple studio monitor(trinitron)and they are pretty excellent.

Re: The Quest for S-Video
I thought when building the MiSTer there was the option for an analog output board..? I've only been paying moderate attention to this device, but given that it goes hand-in-hand with CRT gaming, wasn't this one of the very first considerations?
Re: The Quest for S-Video
I can get rgbs/rgb/ypbpr via the i/o board abs it works well. Jotego's cores especiallybigbadboaz wrote:I thought when building the MiSTer there was the option for an analog output board..? Re: The Quest for S-Video
linuxbot3000 on eBay makes both a VGA version as well as a SCART version w/ audio, may be out of stock at the moment however.
https://www.antoniovillena.es/store/pro ... o-adapter/
This fella has one with a NTSC/PAL switch (lots of other interesting goodies on his site as well!)
That AxunWorks one looks very cool and stylin’ + I like the adjustable potentiometers on the underside, but WHEW that price is hefty!
http://retrotekshop.com/products?pn=SVGASW6P
^ This guy doesn’t have a dedicated RGB to Svid/composite unit, but this switch can encode the output!
https://www.js-technology.com/store/ind ... r=category
^ My good buddy has a SCART version, he makes wonderfully designed gear and has been for 2+ decades. The V2 also has an output for un-altered RGB (well, altered to ensure proper video levels!). Wanna make sure to feed it 75ohm level sync, however... though you could message him and he could probably modify it to accept TTL levels

Re: The Quest for S-Video
Ok, that's a pretty good reason to want SVideo. I'm not familiar with that particular monitor, but I have gotten fantastic images on SVideo on security monitors. They often have slotmasks which give a very unique look that I like. I have a 13" Panasonic right now that is one of my favorite tube displays ever. Eventually I'm going to get a Linuxbot3000 transcoder for it, but I have other things I want to spend my money on at the moment. Those Apple-branded tubes are pretty damn great, too. How did you color match the two monitors?
This surprises me. I had a 2 and I now have a 3. I've not used the 4 yet, but both of my boards had nice sharp pictures in interlaced and in progressive with decent color separation. I've tested the RPi3 in PAL as well with good results (for some reason I keep finding multiformat TVs). I know that I am not the only one who has had good experience with the CVBS on an RPi. Maybe we had different board revisions or something.Guspaz wrote:My experience with the composite on my pi2 was that it was really terrible quality. Some of the softest I've ever seen.

Re: The Quest for S-Video
I know that, back when I used composite from a Pi, people suggested either the Xbox 360 E cable or a Zune cable. I used the former and was content with the results. Dunno if there's a 3.5mm to AV cable that people swear by nowadays though, it has been a few years...SCARTicus wrote:This surprises me. I had a 2 and I now have a 3. Re: The Quest for S-Video
I was using some sort of generic cable, and I was using the default output resolution (which doesn't align with NTSC), so one of those may have been contributing to the softness.

using the Xbox cable is actually a good idea
Gonna try this out and see where it will lead me
