Weird line on Sony PVM-1342Q
So I just got my first real PVM a few weeks ago, a Sony PVM-1342Q. I love it, but there's this weird line running down the front of the screen. I know it's not some weird burn-in because the line moves whenever I press a button on the tv and it even moves (albeit less drastically) during normal use. There's also some mild discoloration and distortion in the top right corner of the screen (I'll take some more pictures when I get home). Here's a video of the line https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whP8SzX_RNI. I'm hoping it's just a bad capacitor or something relatively simple like that

I think it's a bad capacitor. I had a vertical line that followed the menu cursor in Super Punch-Out from a proven bad capacitor in the JP-21 cable. I had good JP-21 cable where this didn't happen and used multimeter to measure. Issue here is you haven't tried to rule anything out. If we want to solve for 4 unknowns, we need 4 equations. Rule out the video type, the cable, the console and the television.
-You should try Composite / S-Video / RGB, where the SNES "Component" cable is transcoded RGB but would use PVM Component circuitry
-Try different cable of same type
-Try different SNES
-Try different television
Not everyone has extra cables or analog input televisions I realize. Retro gaming store let me test with their equipment since I bought the SNES from there. Power supplies go bad too but I don't expect is the issue.

Re: Weird line on Sony PVM-1342Q
Yeah, I didn't really think to add more detail lol.
video type: The line appears with RGB, S-video, and composite. Haven't been able to try out component transcoded into RGB yet
the cable: The line has appeared with every cable type I've tried, RGB of otherwise
the console: The line appears on the PVM with everything I've thrown at it. Over RGB I've tried my modded Snes mini, Genesis model 1, modded N64, and a supergun (although that was the last system I've tried over RGB)
the television: I have RGB going into the PVM, and then out of the PVM to a Retrotink RGB2Comp into my Sony Trinitron. The Trinitron doesn't have the line.
I think it's fair to say the problem is with the PVM itself.

Re: Weird line on Sony PVM-1342Q
Gotcha, I didn't really mean the RGB/Component test as being good to try. Just that if it didn't work, you'd need another cable or television to see if the line comes from RGB or Component.
Most likely problem is with the PVM itself sure. More than one possible cause than a capacitor since every video type is impacted. Sorry I don't have high level knowledge of the inner workings of the degauss coil or purity ring or any of the other hardware components that can go bad. My background is circuits. At least if leaky capacitor, you can see for yourself. Just be aware of risk of shock from non-discharged capacitors.
Other possibility is electromagnetic interference (EMI). Like if you're sitting an unshielded speaker near the PVM, running it or the consoles next to your refrigerator or something else with an electric motor. I doubt that though.
I think you'd have the manuals but to save time for someone else:
owner's manual: https://docs.sony.com/release/pvm1344Q.pdf
service manual: https://archive.org/details/SonyPVM1341 ... viceManual
