A Super FX chip view of today

Post by stoneroses »

"A Super FX chip view of today: an understanding that we need different ways of thinking."

Was this true back in the Spring of 93 when the original Star Fox (Lylat Wars to our mates across the pond)? The reason is that Star Fox brought me to a vision in a day when 2d ruled the world. That incredible fluid 3D on rails, stooter-related, its like a movie sort of, somebody shoot Slippy down, ghetto chip looking, game that I remember it to be. That somehow this is where all of gaming may someday go, but has not yet. Almost touching base, with the future, but doing it today. Hence, this was a different way of thinking. One that one would hope would be alive in today's games. What game would represent and recognize?

These gems are why we like games. Like Panzer Dragoon Orta or its raved out techno bastard son Rez. What do you think?

Don't ask me... I like old 2d games :P I think they should evolve *that* genre.

I remember my best friend was addicted to Starfox though. He beat it on the hardest setting, and I watched him play it a fair bit. Had a few goes myself, but... but the third dimension just isn't for me. Reminds me when I first played the Dreamcast Ecco the Dolphin... I didn't want a dolphin sim, I wanted a game. I'm sure there was a game in there somewhere, but I haven't yet cared enough to find it.

Umi, maybe you're being unfair to 3D gaming because you take Ecco the Dolphin as a reference - but Ecco, either 2D or 3D, is absurdely complex and difficult!

3D has its place :P I'm an old-school FPS fan... don't play 'em much anymore cuz I get owned online (I stopped after Doom 2, then a bit of Quake, now it's just UT very rarely... most people have never stopped SINCE Doom 2... I can't compete, though it's still a blast).

p.s. that's first-person SHOOTING, not first-person SWIMMING :P

Star Fox is called Star Wing in Europe, Lylat wars is the N64 version.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
