Has anybody played it in 480p to see if that fares any better than 720p?

Unfortunately yes. I hate RetroArch it’s the worst piece of software ever created with a menu structure that just makes you hate the world. But I do think that if I spent a few hours to tweak that nightmare and you could still launch everything through the original menu it should be able to do everything I would want from it :)

I’ll try running it thru my Extron DXP with the EDID set to 480p, I guess!

I can't see any way to output at 480p over HDMI, but I think it's safe to assume that the scaling would be similar to the built in screen as it is 800x480px.

EDIT:

I believe this would be the best scaling on the AC Mini display for all* resolution options to get shimmer-free scrolling and what I would like to do if and when it gets hacked. Every resolution scaled by a factor of 2 could also have decent single pixel scanlines applied.

The red border is 640x480, every horizontally oriented game on the system is scaled to this resolution.

*Not much can be done about Scramble Spirit in TATE mode since it's running at 496x384, but I actually don't think this looks too bad as it is on the Minis screen. The shimmering is minimal compared to a lot of the other games.

The 224x320 TATE frame might be too small. Rotating the screen along with controls could be a better alternative.

I forced 480p and the CRT filter was somehow *worse*. Shimmering in Wonder Boy felt about the same (bleh). I can try and do some captures later if you’re truly interested.

It would be neat to see, but I assume 720 is better with less shimmering because of the higher resolution? Neither 480p or 720p is good enough out of the box unfortunately. The CRT filter is just pure nonsense as there isn't enough scanlines and they are placed on top of the pixels which makes no sense :D
