Listening to shmup music before playing the game

Post by icycalm »

I am still not done with the first Psyvariar but I just got the Psyvariar 2 soundtrack and I've had "Weakboson ~ GorgeCity" on repeat for the past half hour. I can see myself weaving a path through dense bullet patterns without even closing my eyes.

"Graviton" is also a cool track.

edit: "Eta" is neat too.

Yeah, I know where you're coming from. I bought Border Down before the Under Defeat release, since I was sure demand for it would go up afterwards (and I was right), but haven't had time to really delve deeply into it yet. Gotta beat UD first.
I'm listening to BD's soundtrack a lot though. Great stuff. :)

Yeah, the Psyvariar music is really good, among the recent shooter tunes I've enjoyed most since the Ray Trilogy's stuff.

Since familiarity breeds contempt though, and I actually have fun playing the games themselves, I try to not listen to the tunes too much outside the game.

I bought the Thunder Force V Lost Technology soundtrack months before I bought the actual game.

I think every Darius fan can say they have listened to the music of the games much more than actualy playing them.

Purely based on the released sample track, I'll be getting a Trigger Heart Exelica soundtrack when it'll be out. Since the game hasn't been announced for a home release I am not certain if I'll ever own it.

A DC port would be a "must have" for me though! :)

Speaking of OSTs, I've not seen hide nor hair of ESPGaluda II's OST...anyone know if it's out yet?

Haha, probably. I've got B.T. Dutch on now... there's just something about OGR's music that really appeals to me. I usually can't stand the kind of industrial sounds you hear in G-Darius, for example, but his composition always shines through. :D

I gave Ibara's soundtrack a few spins before playing it, and also DOJ's. I can't say they were big factors in my eventual purchasing of these games, but they certainly did no harm. :)

Oddly enough I just listened to the G-Darius soundtrack yesterday (I don't listen to vg music by itself often). But I did not play it afterwards, so.

I listened to Lords of Thunder's soundtrack before I played it, which was about a month after I got the game. It still created an oppressive feeling even though I knew nothing about the game and stages other than that they had great music. I have heard Darius Gaiden's soundtrack, Dragon Saber's, Ibara, and some tunes from G-darius.

Spoken for truth. I spun my Darius Gaiden Saturn disc in my stereo quite a bit (even in the car) when I first got it. I don't do that so much now, but for a while I was listening to a lot of Darius Gaiden.

I'm relatively new to the series and that already sounds like truth.

Might as well put this here.

Get one of this person's works, the TranceShift NonStop TranceRemix 2005, and guess where 13:17 and 21:38 of the song is from. ;)

I do this often with games, actually. In fact, its funny you mention Psy2 - I still haven't played either game but I've listened to the album so often. I love Eta, its a fantastic piece of work.

One of the interesting things, I think, is then playing the game after having heard the music for a while. For example, I bought Gradius IV's soundtrack years before buying the PS2 pack with the game, and it was funny, because I had all these notions about how the stages would be based off the soundtrack... and they were NOTHING like I imagined :P

I'll be looking to continue this trend when I pick up that Ray'z box set, very soon, hopefully! :D

I listened to Guwange's soundtrack before playing the game, and after that, I was obsessed with wanting to play it for the first time.

Same thing happened with Espgaluda. When I heard (IINM) Ravine (Stage 2), I thought that was one of the most badass pieces of shmup music I'd heard in a long, long time. When I finally played that stage on the PS2 version, I was in heaven.

And then there are times where I'll be hearing music in non-shmup games, like Fear and Sin in DJ Max Portable (PSP), and feel like I'm fighting a boss in a shmup. Man, what a great feeling!

Thanks for the link. This sounds very video gameish.

So, spill the beans man, what tracks did he drop at 13:17 and 21:38?

The first two minutes of the mp3 is from Final Fantasy IV.
13:17 is from Perfect Cherry Blossom
17:44 is from Perfect Cherry Blossom as well
21:38 is from Enbodiment of Scarlet Devil
RIGHT after that one is the Plateau Stage from Battle Garegga, I think.

I ended up buying the R-Type Final OST long before getting hold of the game... And ended up liking the OST much more than the game.
