Zero Wing PAL question

Post by Ceph »

I got the PAL version of Zero Wing (with the famous All Your Base intro) for cheap the other day. When run at 60Hz, is it identical to the Japanese version (speedwise)? Barring the hilarious intro translation, are there any other differences?

Another question, has this game only been released in Europe and Japan?

The sound will change slightly but the game speed on 60hz is essentially the same as NTSC-J.

Nope, not on MD. Funny thing, some games if booted from another territory give you the import layout, Streets of Rage 2 (Bare Knuckle) or V Five (Grind Stormer) but not with this game so the only way to get the translated intro is via the Euro version.

Hmm, while the game's speed changes, the music doesn't seem to go faster or slower when I toggle between 50Hz and 60Hz. Are you sure?

I played the, um... "Internet" PAL version a bit before I bought the actual PAL version. I'm on a US system, and I really didn't see a change in the game's playing speed or in the music's tempo. It doesn't feel or sound sped up at all. Maybe I'm on the receiving end of a fluke with my first generation Genesis?

I was asking the same question in the hardware forum last week... So if it looks like the PAL version will play on a US system without any speed issues then I might as well go for it.

Although I really want to get a JP version, just so I can write a decent review for the Japanese version, not like all the other ones that are like "OMG ALL YOUR BASE 0/10 WORST GAME EVER!!" and "OMG ALL YOUR BASE 10/10 BEST GAME EVER"... damn mainstream gamer twats...

My opinion: it's pretty decent (if you can stand respawn points - I can't), but never moves beyond average. It's not awful like Curse nor great like Eliminate Down. Other than "all your base", it's nothing too noteworthy.

can you believe i actually had this game back in the day and bought it again for virtually nothing around 2001, completely unaware of the AYB craze? i sucked at english back in 2001, tho.

I'm going to get the JP version of the game for the Megadrive. In a short review, I gave it a 8/10 because it's a great game, but it's slow pace and the checkpoint system can sometimes be a bitch.

I personally think Zero Wing is pretty dull, to be honest.

I never said anything about speed regarding sound, but the output seems different on 60hz setting default PAL. Sounds a bit different is what I meant.
