Air Raid: This is not a drill.

Post by Damocles »

My girlfriend and I went to a new bar/arcade hybrid that opened up nearby called Dave and Busters. Needless to say, the place was populated mostly by gun and driving games. However, one of the machines was a cockpit-style bubble that featured an arcade version of Crimson Skies, Jedi Starfighter, and a vertical shooter called Air Raid. Granted, you used an analog flight stick to control movement. It really wasn't that good, but I found it amazing that such a thing would exist in a modern arcade here in Kansas. Anyone else seen this one?

BTW, I had a chance to play House of the Dead 4 and I must say I don't like the direction that series is taking.

Are you controlling a helicopter in this game? The viewpoint was similar to Raystorm right? If so, I think I've played it.

It was mildly entertaining, but it was far to easy to get vitality power ups. Also, the amount of missiles you get seemed like way too much and I just kept using them a lot.

If i'm talking about the wrong game this was such a waste of time.

How far could you get? I think I remember passing 5 levels before I bit the dust.

Pffffft.....I switched helicopters after the first level.....ended up using a weak-ass black chopper for Stage 2. The enemies are just too strong if you're not powered up, and I bit the dust.....hard. Lost all 5 lives in that level. Not to mention that you don't start with rockets...

yeah, parts 1 and 2 were definitely the best. 3 was a piece of shit, 4... I hated at first, but I'm starting to like it a little more. It's still waaaaayyy too fucking hard, but I won't complain too much when it's at a nickel arcade here for 20 cents a play, haha. It's a definite improvement over 3 at least, IMO.

Dave and Busters needs to die a horrible death. The one out by me charged $3 per play on many of the machines, and they had them on the highest settings. People don't realise that they're spending so much because of the credit card thing (and making it not match up easilly to the dollar)... at the one out here, most games where 10-12 credits, which accounted to just about $3 per play... that's insane... especially because most of the stuff was naomi anyways, and I could buy it and play it for *free* at home.

One thing that annoyed me about this game: The seat your in moves back an d forth when you move the flight stick left and right. So essentially, it makes the game a lot harder. What were they thinking?

They where thinking "now, how can we get these bastards out of this game more quickly, and still make it look cool and fun?" or something along those lines.

Yeah, Dave and Busters pretty much sucks. Oddly enough, there were NO fighting games at all. None, nada, zilch. Not even a Tekken. Come to think of it, there were no games that even used a regular joystick, save the Pac-Man/Galaga retro cabs they had there.

This game is actually called "Air Strike". Some Russian company called Divo made it as a PC title. "Air Raid: This is not a drill" is actually some non-shmup game where you man a battleship's guns to shoot down planes, and sometimes is found in these multigame cabs.

Another game I've seen in one of these is ExZeus, somewhat like Space Harrier with a flying mech.

At GameWorks, I once saw their Tsumo sim cab had crashed with a Windows error message. D&B's prices are a little easier to take if you buy credits $25 at a time- you get a significant amount of bonus credits to soften the blow.

I love D&B. All the shooting games (gun). And then the basketball and football games where you actually throw a football and basketball, great fun. Especially if you are in a group.

I hate hostage situations in gun games. I tend to off my fair share of bystanders in Virtua Cop 3, LA Machine Guns, or Ghost Squad. Thankfully Namco doesn't really use hostages in their Time Crisis series except for once during TC2's battle with Diaz. Crisis Zone is one that's a lot more fun IMO due to the total lack of hostages- just basically annihiate everyone and everything in your way with no repercussion.

well if you hate mowing down hostages, you'll like House of the Dead 4 since there's nothing but zombies to kill. Not even any of those "save your partner" events like in HotD3. Of course, having no hostages means less life-ups to be obtained from saving any, so have fun with that!

I love Air Raid, great shooter!

I'm just not impressed with the quality of Sega's Arcade light guns, for their House of the Dead series. The gun on the House of the Dead 4 cab. didn't even feel like it at been calibrated properly; the accuracy was pretty bad overall.

Well, there are more 1ups from barrels, but you have about 0.05 seconds to shoot the 1up before the camera veers off of it.

They probably weren't calibrated properly... I know at AI, their old ranger mission shot off screen when you aimed at somebody onscreen.

Heh, I managed to do that too.... Even funnier was watching my brother play, doing the bomb defusing thing... When he got there I reminded him of the order, yet he *still* got it wrong. Although I've been known to do the same thing in point blank...

This is actually a shmup? or a light-gun game? I've never seen a game at D&B I ever wanted to play (short of retro arcade set with galaga in it).

I have a feeling you are all fooling me and this is another 3-d shooter kind of thing.

yep.

Someone with plenty of money and time on their hands should transplant this game into a standard cab.

At least you still can get life-ups from the end-level grade (I assume getting lots of Perfects or other high marks while killing zombies throughout the stage helps that).

Police 911 is not bad. Hostages are still an annoyance, but less so you can hide long enough to let them run by, or you can tilt left or right to get them out of your vantage point and shoot BEHIND them.

Seriously, I wish Sega would add a means of raising your guard to later HotD or VC series games. Even Konami has done it (World Combat & Lethal Enforcers 3). This would mean a timer would be added, but I don't mind.

I can hardly wait for Time Crisis 4.

yes, the grade you get at the end of a stage is dependent on the number of Perfects (consecutive headshot kills), accuracy, and your score. Get a B or higher and you get +1 life. (even if you get an S grade, which is hard as hell to get... you still only get +1. lame)

and yes, by the time you find any life-ups in the levels it's usually too late to shoot them before the screen scrolls off.

as of right now I can get to the 4th stage on one credit, but from then on it's just insane. and the 5th boss is harder than the last boss IMO.

Or, better yet, a home port! :D Although, as far as moving cabs go, I found this one to be a lot less distracting then, say, After Burner II.

I really didn't like the gun in hotd4... it didn't work very well for me, but I think I was shaking the gun in the wrong direction, so meh.

I've played on three different cabinets (one super-deluxe, two smaller size) and didn't have an issue with the gun on any of them. Accuracy was fine, and the only time I've ever failed one of the "shake" events was on the last boss.

Well well well...as it turns out there IS a home version of it.

http://www.airstrike3d.com/free-download-games.html

Check it out for yourself. I'm wondering if it's not originally a PC game just stuck in a cab. It would definately explain why the game would sometimes stutter.
