4:3 Compatible games on the XBOX 360

Post by RadiantAnsel »

Hello everyone! Nice to meet you all!
So, I'm sure anyone have done this before, but the 360 is officially terminated, no new games coming, and so forth, so I decided to do this quick experiment, as I got my hands on an old VGA monitor with their respective cables.

"Why it's this important?"
First of all, unlike other game communities, we are very connected to this resolution, our games are usually better played on this old monitors and so on, there are even situations in our case where the games run BETTER when you play like this (SDOJ).

"You forgot x Title"
I will be willing to add and edit this post as many times as necessary, I don't own every 360 games and I will never be able to test ***every single game***, as I'm also testing XBLA games in general and retail releases (Virtual-On, Senko no Ronde, Indies...), so if you know one, then let me know! I (And the community) will appreciate it!

Without anything to add, here is the current list (11/28/2020):

Games were set up in 480p/4:3 on the system configuration.

(THEY JUST WORK, PERIOD):
-Bullet Soul
-Bullet Soul: INFINITE BURST
-Capcom Arcade Cabinet (Sadly no CPS1 titles :'p)
-DeathSmiles
-DoDonPachi DaiOuJou Black Label EXTRA
-DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu (Both Discs)
-Eschatos
-Espgaluda II Black Label
-Ikaruga
-Ketsui Kitsuna Jigokutachi EXTRA
-KOF Sky Stage
-Konami XBLA games (Digital Eclipse ports... They aren't that great, no Tate mode either).
-Mamorukun wa Norowarete Shimatta
-Mushihimesama
-Mushihimesama Futari
-Namco 80's XBLA games (Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, New Rally X, Galaga, Xevious...) (Sadly, no TATE mode whatsoever, they were close to be perfect!!)
-R-Type Dimensions (Only the Menu is 16:9, actual gameplay is 4:3)
-Radirgy Noa Massive
-Raiden Fighters Aces
-Raiden IV
-Sakura Flamingo Archives (No, there is no TATE for games that need it).
-Triggerheart Exelica
-Shikigami no Shiro III
-Shooting Love 200X (Pretty sure the other one works too, Ge-Sen Love Plus Pengo does not).
-Space Invaders Extreme

(They do, but...):
Games on this situation DO support 4:3, and some of them actually swap resolutions it seems (Otomedius G), but it's limited to a single mode mostly because they were "Enhanced Ports" made for 16:9 consumer TVs/Monitors (Gorgeous Mode in Otomedius, Under Defeat New Order Mode and Strania for example), but they include a port of the original Arcade game, or you can select to disable the 16:9 mode.

Now, you may be asking on some ports (Mostly Cave) what's "Wide Mode"?
The games also supports 4:3, but in a very (honestly) bullcrap way, there is an option called "Wide Mode" in options where it zooms in and out the screen, I don't know if this was a sort of solution for actual 240p or something, but you will need to constantly swap options the first time you set up these games.

-DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou ("Wide Mode", it actually runs better the less resolution you set).
-MuchiMuchi Pork & Pink Sweets ("Wide Mode").
-Otomedius Gorgeous (Original Mode only, original aspect Ratio was 5:3, that's why it has borders).
-Strania (Needs to be selected in options).
-Trouble Witches NEO (Original Mode only).
-Under Defeat HD (Arcade Mode only).

(CAN BE FORCED):
Games on this situation don't have internally a way to make them look 4:3 (Not even via in-game stretching like Senko no Ronde does), but you can do a sort of trick in order to make them able to do it.
You are gonna set your console to Widescreen, and I won't recommend playing like this with games that have weird stuff going on (Otomedius G).
You will just need to overscan sometimes and menus are gonna look squeezed out, other than that, it's the only real way to make these games have a compatible aspect ratio in this regard.

-Akai Katana SHIN (Akai Katana/Original Arcade version only).
-DeathSmiles IIX (Arcade Mode only).
-Guwange
-Radiant Silvergun
No fails are allowed.
