Cartridge contact repair? Worst I've seen in person

Post by korpse413 »

I recently purchase a game lot on the cheap and a copy of Pkmn Yellow does not work. When opening up the cartridge I am faced with the worst looking pcb I have ever seen. Idk if acid got in here, or wads and wads of brasso or something? But solder mask is melted off, qtips scrubbed up a lot of green solder mask, its bad. I haven't reflowed any of the chips yet, I am looking up at what they all do and the MM1134 on the upper left (small one) looks kind of rough, maybe thats the culprit? I am not sure how much 'meat' of the gold contacts Gameboys 'chew' on... like are these bubbles not large enough to effect it? I used a GB SP as the only test device so far.

Is there anything I can do to repair the holes in the gold contacts? I'm guessing since this is a late GB / GBC game a replacement compatible donor board isn't exactly afforable. Pictures below, thoughts welcome

If it's a lost cause anyway, you could desolder that chip in question, clean it up, and resolder. I don't think those connections to the gb are the problem.

Think this will work for a donor and the game is pretty cheap.

update - so I scraped a lot of the gunk that was on the contacts. A lot of it appeared to be more of the mystery melted solder mask somehow that gave the appearance of cavities. I reflowed all chips and noticed I was getting a clearer 'Nintendo' logo under the GameBoy loading screen as opposed to garbage - thing is, the tip of the letter 't' in Nintendo was cut off, showing more like 'NinTendo'. Other times after reseating the cart a chunk of different parts of the logo are gone, a lot of times in the first 'N'. I realize this might sound odd but I am hoping this is a known symptom. After reseating many times I get a successful 'Nintendo' logo and the Pokemon Yellow game loads but with sprite glitches. My sprite issue is pretty much 1:1 of what is happening in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cr70EZP890 - does anyone know what my issue is? Is it a completely failed part?
