Video Screen blacking out in between Menus and Fights (PS1)

Post by Aramis02 »

Hello guys. After searching this forum for answers, I cant seem to find a solution to my oddly specific problem.

I decided to record my playthrough of Chrono Cross on my PS1 (scph-5501) via Framemeister Mini and ElGato HD.

The Intro AMV and Initial Demo were looking superb and continuous.

However, when press Triangle to shift to the game's Menu screen, the TV Screen blacks out and keeps saying NO SIGNAL for 5 seconds, then the Menu appears, then goes to NO SIGNAL again when I go back my characters. It does this everytime. It would also black out for a few seconds before and after fights.

I tried turning off the Sync - same
I tried putting the video on Standard - same
I tried changing interchanging the HDMI outputs - same
I disconnected the ElGato - same
I disconnected the framemester CSYNC Scart cable and used the AV cable - same (my LUMA cable shows no video at all)
I connected the AV cable directly from the PS1 to the HDTV (TCL QUHD P715) - same

I tried a couple of games (Legend of Dragoon and Saga Frontier 2) --- watched the AMVs, toggle the Menu Screens and fought a few monsters... NO BLACK SCREEN NO PROBLEMS whatsoever.

After ruling out possible hardware issues, this gives me the assumption that maybe its just Chrono Cross having some video problems. If I am right on this, could you guys provide a few suggestions on how to remedy this issue?

I can live with it the temporary black outs if I am just playing but it will not look good if I am recording as well.

Thanks. :)

I bet this forum's members thought this question was beneath them, and by now you probably figured out the answer yourself, but it's Friday and I'm in a good mood. The reason for the blackouts is the resolution switch between 240p and 480i. Some games have the gameplay in 240p but the menus in 480i, and that'll wreak havoc on all your scalers.

Solutions to completely eliminate the blackouts, from worst to best:
  1. Become an expert in PSP and Vita custom firmware, buy an expensive PSTV, hack it, and play your own ripped ISO in the Adrenaline PSP emulator.
  2. Pick up a cheap, generic SCART to HDMI converter like this one. Downsides are oversaturated colors, forced stretching to 16:9, and 7 frames of lag.
  3. Play your disc on a PS3.
  4. Get in line to purchase a PS1Digital kit, and then get in line for the modders to install it.
