Just bought a XRGB Mini Framemeister, what's next?

Post by Candlemass »

Hello,

So, I'm going to come right out and say that I'm a complete rookie when it comes to this. I've had a SNES Mini that I've wanted to get back into playing but with my modern HDTV the picture quality is absolute trash through the standard Nintendo provided RCA cables (red/white/yellow male) and I have been avoiding playing it for this reason. I started doing some research into how to fix the issue. Hands down the most recommended solution was to buy a Framemeister. So I have done so and am currently waiting for it to arrive. What else do I need in terms of cables or other mods to the system to get the best image quality outside of Framemeister firmware updates/profiles that you can install/find online and configure yourself?

I have read about an RGB mod that is relatively cheap and there is a local shop in my city that can do the installation with recommendations on several websites. Is this mod necessary along with the Framemeister or will it be redundant? If so, what parts/cables do I need outside of the HDMI cable from the Framemeister to my TV?

If I won't see any improvement with both the RGB mod and the Framemeister, what do I need in terms of cables for just the Framemeister by itself? I see that the Framemeister supports the same basic RCA cables the console originally came with but will that provide the desirable outcome I’m looking for?

Thanks in advance and I do realize there are threads dedicated to the Framemeister here already but I am confused as to what I need outside the the Framemeister unit itself and from what I have read thus far, I couldn’t find a clear answer for my situation.

Cheers.

You can certainly just use composite video into your Framemeister with the SNES Jr and it will definitely look and perform better than just plugging straight into your TV. But, the optimal solution would be an RGB mod. and yes, it will look 10 times better than the standard composite cables. It is absolutely worth doing.

You'll just need a board like this installed. It's quite a simple install. Make sure when installed, it is also wired up to restore S-video functionality, which will make it compatible with the below Scart cables.

Along with that, you'll need a RGB cable to plug into your Framemeister. This cable will plug into the adapter that comes with the Framemeister.

With all of that said, in regards to the cable above, that is a JP-21 cable, which is the Japanese standard. JP-21 is the adapter type which comes with the Framemeister as it's a Japanese product. If the SNES Jr is all you ever plan to use with your Framemeister, that JP-21 will be fine. However, if you ever plan to use any other consoles with Scart RGB on the Framemeister, you should consider getting Euro Scart cables and a Euro Scart Framemeister adapter, which are what the American and European consoles use. A Euro cable and the Euro adapter are here.

Awesome. Thanks for the explanation. That clarified everything.

I saw many posts suggesting the use of a d-terminal cable and then wasn't sure if that was the best solution especially if the RGB mod would show any improvement over just the framemeister by itself.

Then I was confused over which SCART cable to use or if it was a better option and what the difference was between the two.

Now I'm aware.

Cheers.

Technically, JP-21 is just called JP-21. I always end up calling it Scart JP-21 because they have similar looking connectors on the end. So I think that's where some confusion might come in sometimes.

You should watch the videos of My Life in Gaming, they're incredibly good:

(Keep in mind some videos are years old and newer and better options might have come along)
