Then this is not a good choice for me as I plan to put the flashcart in there and never eject it because the cartridge slot spring seems to be worn out in my console. Have you had any experience with the Sky3DS and/or Sky3DS+?

I don't think either of the Sky units support DS games. At least that's how I remember them. I tried both versions back when they came out. It was nifty to be able to use them on any 3ds regardless of firmware. The menu system cards were constantly being broken by firmware updates from Nintendo.
The Sky cards have a button or buttons on the top that switch the games rather than a menu system. You couldn't put many games on the Sky3DS, but it was simple to use and worked. I stuck to the Gateway back then as it was the better card once you got a system with the proper firmware and got it going. I replaced the Gateway with a softmod once those became idiot proof.
If we are talking 3ds then nothing will beat just installing the games into memory with a softmod.
Yeah, Lawfer I have to ask - what's your objection to doing a softmod? If you want to keep your 3DS stock, it would probably still work out cheaper to just buy a second 3DS for modding.
The Sky3DS is okay, however I don't think the game compatibility is 100%. There is also the issue with ROM headers, it's been a while now and this is from memory so could be some mistakes here.. but I think every genuine cartridge has a unique "header", and if a cartridge dump is available online then the header can be tracked by the Nintendo servers as a known dump. So, if you go online with a Sky3DS and use a known ROM dump, Nintendo could theoretically detect that and ban you. When installing CIA via softmod, Nintendo's eShop ticketing system works in such a way that they have no way of knowing whether it is a legit install or not.
There haven't been many eShop bans on the 3DS though, there were a couple waves some years back but I think it turned out they just banned everyone who played the leaked Pokemon Sun/Moon games before release.
The best times of 3DS game installs were during the freeshop era. It was so convenient. Too bad it's gone. But installing games from .cia files is really easy. .3ds format games require an extra step to convert them to .cia, but still not too bad. There's definitely zero reasons to use a flashcart for 3DS games.

What you have is it a DSTwo or a DSTwo Plus? If it's a DSTwo, you should be fine with a genuine one.

How long ago did you buy it? If you bought it at launch or not long after launch, it's likely a guenuine one.
I can't remember when I bought it, years ago though, maybe 10 years? I can't find a receipt or literally anything about it in my emails! I know it came in the nicely labelled box, and I think it's a DSTWO (no plus). I also have the Gateway with their Red and Blue carts, it's been so long since I've used either of these. memories!
I have an R4 SDHC cart which I use with a DS Lite. The biggest problem with its official firmware is that you can’t load more than 300 games (the first 300 it finds on the SD card).
Alternative menus exist for it (YSmenu) that get around this file limit but with worse game-loading compatibility than the official firmware. There are workarounds that I’ve explored involving using a file manager homebrew software to move the game I want to play to a folder where the official menu will see it as one of the first 300 titles, but it can add minutes to the time needed to start any given game.
Playing DS games on a 3DS isn’t desirable primarily for the black borders it adds on the top screen.

Have you tried the wood kernel rather than the official one or ysmenu? I've used it throughout the years and never had a problem.
Also, the gbatemp forums are generally the best source for info on all of this.
