Battle Traverse - Joystick Issue

Post by Wilsoncqb1911 »

I can't figure out what's wrong. I can get Battle Traverse to recognize the buttons on my stick, but I can't move my character or the menu options with the stick itself. I have a Brooks Universal board. Any suggestions?

I've noticed that older games using DInput instead of XInput end up reading the analogue stick for inputs instead of the d-pad. Try putting the Brooks board into the mode where stick movements are sent as analogue inputs instead of d-pad - hold down start and left on the joystick for three seconds. That's fixed a few games for me, including Neko Navy.

I'm pretty sure it's as Ms. Tea says, yeah. IIRC Battle Traverse only recognises the left stick, maybe even the right (on a UFB these should still function as d-pads - no weird slidey analogue emulation). Your stick might also have a 'mode' button or a switcher for right stick, left stick and d-pad...

I had an issue with a HRAP4 Kai where the game would recognise it as two sticks (P1 and P2), and split the button functions between them. BareKnuckleRoo's advice sorted it, in case the same thing happens to you:
It's not too difficult to workaround though, just map the Start button and the ones for player 2 it thinks exist to buttons on the controller you'd never press, then you can map the rest for player 1. You may also have some success mapping keyboard inputs to the controller via JoyToKey if that fails.

You can choose whether the game uses the analogue stick or the POV hat in the config program.

That should sort it.

edit: Oh, look, that's handy, found from a google search, it's from here apparently :D

Thank you guys! I saw the config option with POV but had no idea what that meant, so I didn't do anything with it. But that did the trick. Thanks for the reminder on changing the input method on the Brooks. I'm sure that would've worked as well, but since the config option fixed it I didn't try.

Now I have a new problem where it thinks I'm playing 2 player despite only having one joystick connected. It makes me select two characters (both with the same joystick) and then I'm playing a 2 player game with one joystick by moving around and shooting with both characters at the same time. In some ways it's kind of like an easy mode, but I really just want to play 1P.

All this just further reinforces why I moved away from PC gaming 20+ years ago when Monkey Island and Loom were relevant PC games. I hate the fiddling to get stuff to work. I just want to play. But being a console gamer and being a shmup fan can be tough since many of the newest shmups never come to console. Although lately it's been getting better.

So.... sigh... it looks like a great game. I'm not sure I'll be playing it since I can't get it to just play normal 1P though. Grr!

There is also that "Disable 2P Play" checkbox on the right side of the config, maybe give that a try?

That did it. Man that seemed unnecessarily difficult. Maybe I am just not used to pc gaming any more. Or I'm too impatient in my old age.

Thank you and everyone that responded.

haha, the trick with pc gaming is just to roll with the wonkyness sometimes, I actually found it quite humorous that this game gave me double the firepower ;-)

Thank you for posting the translated config screen. It helped a lot as I just got this the other day.
Just beat it on difficult with only like 12 continues ( I need to work on that I guess :? )

What a fun little game though. Reminds me of progear mixed with ketsui's lock on system.
