I have one on the way
I know the shmups to get, but the other stuff is lost on me

I have Crows The Battle Action, Astra Super Stars, and Groove on Fight on the way
I'm not interested in any of the Street Fighters as I have the original series on the PS2 and the Alpha series is due for release next month in the states (hopefully they retain the original SFA3 and not the Naomi/DC version).
I'm also not interested in the Neo Geo games
I've played them all to death (used to have an MVS setup)

Vampire Savior is better and cheaper than the PS2 and CPSII versions.
Xmen vs. Streetfighter lacks in gameplay, makes up for it with graphics and general corniness. Must have game for when friends are over. Just don't spend too much time on it.
D&D port sucks, don't get it.
Virtua Fighter 2 is quality. Very deep/complex, though, as such widely hated. The Battle Garegga of fighters
The NG ports have some advantages over the MVS versions...you might want to look into it anyway.
Spend an extra quarter for Sega Rally while you're at it.

Don't forget
Last Bronx. weapons in a 3d fighter, only game before with nun chuks in the UK before maxi in DC soulcalibur. Very good
Fighting Vipers. very Stylish, some people prefer it to virtua fighter 2.
Both pretty dam good and comparable to virtua fighter 2.
Dead or Alive 1 is also on the Saturn can't remember region details.
Fighters megamix japanese version, fastest one, kick ass compilation of virtua fighter 2 and some moves from 3 and all fighting vipers staff + some cool characters ura bahn and janet the chick from virtua cop, shes basically Aoi from VF 3. My Pal copy is slow as hell.
2D fighters theres loads
I recommend street fighter alpha 2, xmen children of the atom, marvel super heroes and xmen vs street fighter.
Guardian heroes is also sorta applicable, but you probably know alot about it.

Dungeons and Dragons is good. Astra Superstars is pretty amazing. Uh... Guardian Heroes is top notch. X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes are all really good. Fighters Megamix rocks. Virtua Fighter 2 is really good.
Beat 'em ups:
Dungeons and Dragons
Guardian Heroes
Other than that... the Saturn was kinda skimped on that genre. Crows is alright, but not really worth the price of admission IMO.
Fighting games:
Astra Superstars is awesome.
X-Men vs. Street Fighter
Marvel vs. Street Fighter
Marvel Super Heroes
Rabbit
Sonic Council
Since you said leave out the SF and Neo-Geo stuff...

you forgot Tenchi wo Kurau 2 aka Warriors of Fate, which is an excellent Capcom 2p sidescroller, a la Final Fightjp wrote:Beat 'em ups:

Whoops! Yeah, that game is pretty damn cool too.
DO NOT... I repeat DO NOT get Nekketsu Oyako though. Trust me, I'm a huge Tecno Soft fan(boy). And even I hate that game.

turd of a beat 'em up, even if it is rare.
Eh... Crows is fun, its just nothing special. The graphics are nice, but the enemies and levels are very bland. And the gameplay is just mediocre.
Its a decent games and the art style is a lot of fun. But it really doesn't raise any bars or bring anything new to the table.

Elevator Action Returns although not a beat'em up is still a decent side scrolling action game. Of course it can be had on PS2/XB/PC in Taito Legends 2/Taito Memories Joukan with nicer graphics and no loading, but ultimately slower gameplay which for me, doesn't cut it.
The only loading prevalent in SS is before stage and it's minimal. Great game too.
D&D Collection is great but again loading is the only stopping this game, moreso than EAR.
Tenchi Wo Kurau 2 if had is (you guessed it) also great, and possibly one of the best side scrollers of that generation on home console.

even bad ones
even if I didn't really "pay" for this one

Rabbit is like a poor man's JoJo. The SS version has really pixelated sprites.D wrote: What are Rabbit and Sonic Council like?
Sonic Council resembles a doujin fighter with a heavy reliance on combos and the pass-through-for-meter dodge that recent SNK games employ.
I don't think D&D's segment-based loading times are that bad but whatever.
Yeah, I thought the same thing too when I first played it, but I was partly lying to myself to make me feel better about paying $75 for itjp wrote: Eh... Crows is fun, its just nothing special. The graphics are nice, but the enemies and levels are very bland. And the gameplay is just mediocre.

The SD art style was neat, and having the bosses join your team was an interesting feature as well, but like you said, the level design was atrocious. As for the levels themselves? Most of the time you walk 20 feet the whole level and spend a few minutes fighting the same enemies in the same spot. One of the things that makes a beat 'em up good is the change of scenery, something the guys at Athena apparently never got.
I would call it a nice conversation piece ("Yeah, something like 4,500 copies made in the world, no biggie"

The best beat em ups are on the mega drive. I recommend the streets of rage/Bareknuckle trilogy. Guardian heroes on the Saturn is also awesome, although it has elements of an RPG and fighting game.
As for fighters, Saturn is home to some of my favorite titles. I recommend most of Capcom CPSII ports. My top picks are Virtua Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Vampire Savior.
