Sega 315-5684 sound amp chip dead

Post by radiokid »

My SEGA Nomads' sound amp chip, the 315-5684 https://console5.com/wiki/315-5684 is dead. I was hoping to find a replacement in one of my model 2 mega drives but none of them have that chip.

Can I use the Sega Mega Amp or other such mod to replace this chip? Or is there another way I can get sound back and working without the 315-5684 chip?

I posted a few videos on Youtube highlighting the problems I was having https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... QoCGQzEhzZ

I fixed my own issue. Yes you can tap directly into the source audio channels for the nomad. These are PSG IN, FM IN1 and FM IN2 as listed on the Sega 315-5684 IC. These trace back to points TP258, 256 and 257 respectively. PSG was easy, that went to the PSG pad of the Sega Triple Bypass board, I hooked YL up to FM IN1 and YR to FM IN2 (no idea if it makes a difference). I removed the caps at points between the TP pads and the 315-5684 just in case they interfere with the sound on its way to the bypass board.

As you can see from my video playlist, my latest video shows sound working through some makeshift RCA cables into my TV, while the video is played on the LCD screen, crazy testing set up I know, but it works for now.

Now I need to fit the bypass board in its entirety and hook it back into the internal nomad speaker and headphone jack.

If this experience has taught me anything its that with some of my own research I can solve issues, woo!

Hopefully this helps others. I also plan on doing much better videos of some other upcoming mods.
