Recommend me an OSSC-compatible 4K TV (960p?)

Post by valiantiumblade »

I've been in the process of completely overhauling my home theater setup, the two biggest upgrades being a 4K TV and an OSSC. Currently I'm still using a 1080p LG LED set and the RetroTINK 2X - I'll be buying an OSSC within the next couple days, TV hopefully later this year. I'm not really fussed whether the OSSC will fit my current setup as long as the TV I'm gonna upgrade to fits the bill.

Problem is, I'm not sure what TV to actually get. What initially sparked this is when I played RE3make on the X with my current setup: the blacks were so washed out that the game was honestly unplayable. So immediately, 4K HDR and good black levels became my biggest priority.

I broadly narrowed it down to either an LG OLED or a Samsung QLED, specifically something in the 55" range. Prices for the former were immediately kinda hard to swallow, plus I'm worried about image retention (more on that later.) I had pretty much settled on getting a QLED at this point, specifically the Samsung Q70R, but I saw some claims in a bunch of forum threads that it doesn't play nice with the OSSC's 960p mode.

This sucks because the Q70R fits all my other requirements perfectly. The VA panel makes it resistant toward image retention caused by bob deinterlacing (something I haven't been able to use much on the RetroTINK with my current IPS TV,) the input lag is low and it supports local dimming. As far as OLEDs go, I know image retention is an issue specifically when objects persist on-screen for longer periods of time, but how do they handle the flickering employed by bob deinterlacing?

Another thing that makes Samsung appealing is how flexible the zoom function is. I haven't looked into other brands too much, though I know LG is a bit rigid in that regard.

As far as what I specifically wanna use the OSSC for:
  • - Sega Saturn
    - PSPgo (specifically for 240p PS1 games)
    - RGB-modded N64 once I get one hopefully
    - original Xbox
    - PS2
    - Wii
I'm looking for a TV that supports both 5x 240p and 2x 960p and doesn't suffer from image retention when bob deinterlacing is used. Those are definitely points I can't budge on. Compatibility with older systems isn't really relevant since I'm just gonna use a MiSTer for those.

So, my basic questions boil down to:
  • - Does anyone here have experience with the Samsung Q70R and can confirm whether it handles 960p and 1200p from the OSSC well?

    - If the Q70R DOES struggle with those signals, is there an AV receiver that might help out while adding little to no lag?

    - Is there another 4K HDR TV you might recommend that fulfills those OSSC requirements (1200p/960p, no image retention with bob deinterlacing) while also having low input lag (20ms or less) and good black levels? I'd be willing to spend more on a newer Samsung, one of the LG OLEDs (which seem to have better support for those weirder resolutions) or a different brand altogether if it fits the bell.

    - I'd DEFINITELY prefer to have Freesync and 120hz support as well. Also bigger than 55" would be overkill.
Keep in mind I also live in Germany which could impact my options somewhat. Thanks!

Bob deinterlacing is not a problem on OLED :)

I have a Q60R and I couldn't get my SFC with OSSC to work on it at all, only the test screen would display and even then only sometimes. I haven't tried anything else though.

I had some trouble getting a stable image from my Super Nintendo in anything higher than 720p on my C8 OLED. The dejitter mod fixed this of course, but it’s worth mentioning :)

One thing to keep in mind regarding the FALD Samsung TVs is that many of them actually disable or use a less effective form of it when in game mode. So they then look even worse compared to OLED.

If you want HDMI 2.1 and 4k120 etc. I think the current LG is pretty much the only option anyway.

Disappointing to hear that even the LGs still having issues with certain consoles + OSSC. Guess I'm really, really lucky that out of my ~20 systems every single one runs in 240pX4/480pX2 without any issues.

Yes it’s disappointing, but we really can’t blame LG for not being compatible with Nintendo’s broken sync signals. At least the consoles can be modded to fix the issue :)

Out of curiosity what TV do you own that handles the SNES perfectly in 4x mode?
