Newbie Q: slight tilt in PVM, picture look ok though

Post by willinliv »

Hi, I think my first post of this might have got lost - I'm a new member and I think in making my first moderated post to the Introductions section and it being approved - if not then I'll try to delete the duplicate.

I have a Sony PVM 9042QM (think that's the same as 8042QM) bought from ebay and arrived earlier in the week and it powers on nicely, picture looks good so far from a zx81 and raspberry pi running Retropie. However I have noticed that it looks like the CRT screen is lopsided or slanted anticlockwise by a few degrees. It had looked like the picture from either computer was straight ( I need to work out about getting a test pattern onto it) it was just that the outside black border was lopsided (and same wirth unity turned off). Also the pixels (or whatever they're called - my greenness showing here) look ok on either verticles left and right, it just looks like there is more pixels at the topright above the text (in the picture linked to below) as opposed to on the left hand side. Is this something that's easy-ish to fix for example rotating against the yoke? I'm happy with the picture otherwise.

Here's a couple of pics: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Xt6aPr4BVMvuMR3SA

Thanks, Will

That might be a little more than just what I'm going to suggest, but to rotate the image you need to open up the CRT's case and manually rotate the Yoke. You can google videos to see how to safely do that. Bringing up a 240p test suite grid can help with this to (you can emulate a version of it like for SNES on your Raspberry Pi).

Hmm, thanks for this Dochartaigh, and the point about running a 240p test suite through the rpi, will try that. Thanks very much for giving me your time. I'm happy to give this a try but the only thing I wanted to double-check is that the raspberry pi image shown on the screen does to me look pretty much spot on and straight, whereas the overall tube looks to be slanted to the one side as evidenced by the black border (that's apparent regardless of the PVM being powered on or off), so it's almost like the tube itself is skewed but the yoke is in the right place. I have taken off the cover to take a look inside to see it there's any obvious way that the overall tube is not aligned correctly but it all looks screwed in correctly. I need to watch some more youtube videos to see if anyone shows the same issue. I wondered if there is often this disparity between units or (and more likely) if I'm happy with the projected image not to worry about it!

Thanks, Will

Here's a couple of pics with a grid from the test suite as suggested
