PCBs to mobile

Post by shmupsrocks »

I've only played shmups on PCB but getting curious about playing on my Android phone. How good does it get? Are there good emulation options? Is lag very low with native options? What is the best type of portable or semi-portable controller for this? Are there 2 player simultaneous options? How is the experience overall?

I've never been happy with gaming on Android precisely because of the lag. I read once that it is built into the Android kernel as part of a feature intended to make operating the OS seem "smoother" visually. That would mean that basically it cannot be removed. I tried hard to get rid of the display lag, but I never could make a dent.

RetroArch exists for Android, so the options for emulators are actually quite good. There are good controllers like 8bitdo. I think RetroArch can be configured for simultaneous 2-player if you use bluetooth controllers.

The experience is great for something like Final Fantasy, but not for shmups.

You would probably be better off with a Nintendo or Sony handheld console. PSP has great emulation of PS1, which gives access to a large number of high quality shmups, and it does TV-out.

Ok sounds like PSP would be the way to go.
