How to adjust the horizontal of Sony Trinitron KV2965AS

Post by mick039 »

Not sure if this is right part of forum if wrong please move.

I recently purchased an old Sony Trinitron KV2965AS. It works great except I've noticed that when playing video games that the screen is slightly over to the right.

I've tried to access the service menu but after trying to old faithful code (disp + 5 + vol up + power on) I noticed that it doesn't work. I then sought the service manual and noticed there is no mention of accessing a service manual (must be an old tv!).

There is however, mention of adjusting the horizontal and vertical using the A Board. I was wondering if anyone has done this and if it worked. Any tips on how to do it (ie. do you use a scredriver and adjust something or is it more technical than that?)

I called up a tv repair guy who didn't really know the answer, he said he could try and fix it but he's charing $100 per hour. Considering I got this TV for 20 bucks I don't really want to drop between 100 - 200 to fix. So any advice would be great!

Thank you.

This TV seems to have a GP-1A chassis which is pretty old and does not come with a service menu yet. Indeed, you'll have to open it up and adjust the picture position with the pots on the A Board. It should look like this (from the service manual):

RV801 (H.CENT) and RV802 (H.SIZE) are the ones you're looking for.

You can use a screwdriver if you're careful. You can also order a "TV Alignment tool" set if you can find one. These tools are made of non-conductive plastic and are the preferred solution for the job

But a screwdriver is fine.

Lastly, I would not give 100+ dollars to a technician for this kind of job. If you're careful, you can do it yourself.

Okay so I opened it up and found the parts to adjust with a screw driver, however the horizontal centre (CN550) I cannot find/ does not have a part to screw. Can anyone help? See diagram below Image

Could you post a couple of pics of the actual PCB?

You move the jumper to the next pin on the connector until the picture is centered. TV must be off when you do this.

Oh yes, that's a good point! "CN" stands for connector, so you're not looking for a potentiometer.
Interesting that they did it this way. I've seen my fair share of european SONY chassis and never saw a jumper setup for horizontal centering.

They were all like that until the early 1990s. Then they used a lever switch. There was also a finer adjustment (pot or service menu) but apparently not on this Australian model.
