Direct YUV to RGB transcoders

Post by headlesshobbs »

I'm looking to see if there's any of these that will accept any resolution (progressive or interlaced) and just straight up convert it for a vga output?

I've had the HDBoxPro and that EGA/VGA scaler in the past. They both presented their own set of problems and they're scalers. Considering it's 2020, we should just have something similar to a native adapter by this point that can do the job without any issues?

I think we're not too far off. Mike Chi's COMP2RGB gets us most of the way there, and I imagine that it wouldn't be terribly difficult to design a variant with a DE-15 socket and maybe a couple switches to select sync level and composite/separate sync output, or one for 75Ω CS/TTL CS/TTL HV.

A GBS 8200 with GBS Control could do what you need. It's mainly a scaler, but you can use it to directly transcode component to VGA. Setting it up and modding your board is a bit of a process, though.

Was the vdigi ever improved upon?

They said it didn't accept interlace, so I don't know if it will also fail with 240p signals.

vdigi works with both 480i and 240p, if you set it to output csync instead of HV
