Need help to set up a BVM-F24U

Post by Liquidus0 »

Hi ! I need some recommandations here. I made some research, but I am still consider myself a noob when it comes to technical stuff, so any kind of help is welcome :) .

I just bought from a friend a BVM-F24U !

I would like to know what is the best way to set up the the wiring and what adapters to use for modern consoles that has HDMI output.

The analog RGB input can only display 1920x1080, while the HD-SDI input can display 1920x1080 and 1280x720.

So I guess that games that run in 720p would be only playable by the HD-SDI input ?

I saw there are many adapters and converter box available, like HDMI to HD-SDI and HDMI to VGA (I already have a male VGA to BNC cable for the analog input). Are any of these better than another ?

And if using the analog RGB input is the best way to go for 1080p games, if wouldn't mind have another set of HD-SDI cables/adapters for games in 720p games.

What would I need to get to get the less lag possible ?

Thank you for you help !

(By the way, I don't plan to use this monitor for my RGB and RGB modded retro consoles has I also have a BVM-20G1U. As the BVM-F24U is a 31kHz monitor, Fudoh already suggested my friend a way to set up with a OSSC, a Extron DSC 301 scaler and a HDMI to VGA converter dongle. That chain would result in a frame or two of lag.)

external HD-SDI converters usually add a frame of lag as well, so using a proper scaler is usually much simpler. On a CRT +/- 1 frame really doesn't matter. Eventually it depends on your sources. Resolution is likely less of a problem, but hitting the exact refresh rates might be the bigger issue.

And what are those? A game's native resolution is not always declared/known (though there's at least one list around). For those that are known to run at 720p, displaying them at their native res will theoretically be 'better' than upscaling to 1080p (and converting to analog RGB via a cheap external DAC, vs letting the BVM do it), but whether the difference will be noticeable while gaming is another matter..

I think I would only use that monitor for watching HD remasters of old movies at 1080p@48Hz every once in a while (I have a 17" JVC that can sort of do it too, but it's tiny ^_^). That's just me though - congrats on finding an F24, it's a very rare beast :)

Is the SDI converter lag mostly from the SDI clocking circuit and SDI being inherently interlaced on the wire or the built-in scaler that many seem to have? The Blackmagic SDI converters seem interesting as most physically lack scaler hardware.

Hello , came across this post thanks to Google , seems you're one of the few owners of a F24. (I'm one myself)
Have you been able to get an image through HD-SDI ?
Bought an Extron DSC HD-3G A and connected 2x SDI to the F24 (Dual Link),
but the image I get is just a static green screen.

Analog RGB ports work perfectly fine but I've been wondering how 4:4:4 looks like on this monitor.
