PS2: Swapping PSU in NTSC console for a PAL one?

Post by velby »

I bought a fat PAL PS2 a while back to use with an HDD to play backups. I know that NTSC PS2 games would run at 60Hz when running on a PAL system, however PS1 games would still be at 50Hz on a PAL console even when the ISO is 60Hz (according to this post: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=61957).

I live in Europe so I'm thinking of importing a North American or Japanese PS2 so I can play both PS1 and PS2 games in 60Hz, but I'm not really sure how to connect the console to a European electrical outlet, since 240V is way too high and will fry it. I've been thinking of getting a step-down converter, but after some searching online I found out I could replace the PSU from an NTSC console with the PSU from my PAL one.

Has anyone tried this, and does it work well?

My PAL console is a SCPH-50004. Is it recommended to swap the PSU with an NTSC console that is also in the 5000x series, or is model number irrelevant?

Thanks!
