I know the Wii is basically a powered up GC so it has perfect GC compatibility (and perfect video if you use the hdmi mod to avoid the terrible Wii video output) and that got me thinking, doesn't the Wii U have perfect Wii compatibility? So shouldn't it also work with GC games?
I never really got into Wii U hacking because it has like 30 great games for it and I own all of them but is it possible to have a Nintendon't type setup on it that lets you create virtual GC memory cards so you can play GC games and just save it to an external HD? I really think it could be an all in one solution for 3 consoles.
Also what is the largest external HD the Wii U supports?
Playing GC and Wii games on the Wii U?

Yes, you can inject Wii, GC and VC games to play them directly from the Wii U mode when softmodden. Works very nicely and I wouldn't want to play it any way else now.

Re: Playing GC and Wii games on the Wii U?
The short of it is that yes, you can do this. Compatibility should be identical to a Wii for Wii and GC games using loaders on the Wii U's hacked vWii.
However, there are some quirks and disadvantages with the Wii U's video output compared to what you could get from the original Wii + an OSSC. On the other hand, for digital displays it is a leaner and simpler solution to use the Wii U at the cost of an arguably small compromise.
Not sure what the largest capacity is for the external HD. I imagine anything up to the TBs should be fine. For any drive you'll most likely need a Y-cable and connect it to both USB ports on the Wii U.

The Wii U's output has issues, like no 240p among other things. You're better off playing GC/Wii games on a GameCube or Wii.

What about just making it 480p?GeneraLight wrote:The Wii U's output has issues, like no 240p among other things. You're better off playing GC/Wii games on a GameCube or Wii.
Re: Playing GC and Wii games on the Wii U?
It's relatively affordable to get an original GameCube connected over HDMI with significantly better image quality than the HDMI output of a Wii U. The Carby is $80, for example. If you want to have all your games on the console, a Datel SD Media Loader is the cheapest solution (they still make/sell them), or a GC Loader PNP if you want a solution that can read data faster.

SWISS can force GameCube games to 240p. I’ve never looked into whether it’s possible on the Wii.ross wrote:How many GameCube and Wii games output at 240p?
Re: Playing GC and Wii games on the Wii U?
I currently have a hdmi modded Wii for my Wii/GC needs but I was thinking that as the Wii U has full Wii compatibility and the Wii has full GC compatibility with the exception of some odd controller peripherals shouldn't there be a way to get that all working basically perfectly with just the Wii U?

Extrems mentioned it might be possible (quote from this thread):Wolf_ wrote:I currently have a hdmi modded Wii for my Wii/GC needs but I was thinking that as the Wii U has full Wii compatibility and the Wii has full GC compatibility with the exception of some odd controller peripherals shouldn't there be a way to get that all working basically perfectly with just the Wii U?

It should be possible to improve things somewhat by developing a new program for the microcontroller responsible for the video interface emulation (code found in cafe2wii title).
