EPROMs for Universe BIOS...

Post by Josh128 »

So the AMD 27C1024 or equivalent is the defacto standard used for Neo Geo modded BIOS's. I have used these with success, but the 2048 version EPROMS are half the price. Anyone ever had any luck using a 2048 for a UniBIOS? I understand there may be a need to use a hex editor to expand the BIOS code to 2048 kb, but theoretically it should work fine, no?

You should only need to double the code. First line starts where last line ends.

I recently used a 4096, quadrupling the code this way.

Anyone here successfully use GQ-4X with ADP-054 adapter to program ST 27C1024 EPROM? I tried a bunch of them and they all gives error messages. I doubt trying AMD will me a different result. I've try Google and it seems people have problem in the past and there isn't any solution other than purchase another programmer.

I have this exact setup and have been able to program some ST branded 27C1024, but a few were really problematic. They'll erase, verify as blank but never write properly.

I have 5 ST 27C1024, none of the will write successfully. I know that's a small sample size, but I don't think all of them will be duds. I've changes all the parameter on device.txt and none will make any difference. The adapter works with 27C400.

Have you tried powering with an external power supply? Also, may need to change the v3/v4 jumper.

Yes, I did them. No difference at all.

I guess I have to get a TL866II PLUS. That programmer works right? Need an adapter for this one too?

Tl866's work great. I have the gq and the tl. Gq is very finicky. TL just works. Also programs GAL's which is nice. No adapter needed for 40 pin.

If I recall correctly there is a software bug with the GQ4x and 27C1024 EPROMs. Try burning them as 27C1001 and see if that works. I believe those 2 EPROMs are interchangeable.

I made a little video to give an idea of how to use this programmer

Hope it helps you out

I looked up 27C1001 spec sheet, it appears to be 32-pins as oppose to 27C1024's 40-pins. Therefore the pins will not line up.

I wonder if GQ-4X only works with OTP version? How could a popular programmer like this can have this issue and continue to sell the ADP-054 for this purpose so long?

My bad, I see the 27c1001 is an 8 bit part. I was thinking of another issue with the GQ-4X and 27C4096 EPROMs. With that EPROM the write always fails, but if you select the 27C4002 instead it will program correctly.

Why don't you try programming it as a 27C210? That is actually a pin compatible equivalent to the 27C1024.

I just tried using 27C210, it also gives an error but it doesn't wrote any thing on to the chip unlike using 27C1024 (few lines of bad codes). I checked the device.txt and it looks 27C210 is base on 27C1024 entry. It just seem like the 27C1024 is borked on GQ-4X.

I burned a AM27c1024 successfully last night with my GQ-4x4 using the AM27c1024 device entry. I'm running GQ Universal EPROM Programmer revision 7.17. I wonder if you have a different version of the software, or maybe specifically the ST part is incompatible.

I have the older version (does not have the x4 suffix) which has the last revision of 6.38 software. Perhaps they fixed it hardware wise on the x4 version. I think it's suppose to be a bit faster at least. I recalled their software are not compatible.
