Good analogue DVD players
Re: Good analogue DVD players
The PS2 can also play DVDs, if you have one of those.

If you can find an Oppo, I believe those were considered close to a gold standard. Good luck finding one for cheap though...
Re: Good analogue DVD players
the difference in video output quality between a cheap and a high-end DVD player is considerably less compared to - let's say - an entry level and a high-end laserdisc player. There are still factors to consider though. The MPEG decoder chip can cause problems with the chroma upsampling (present on A LOT of player) and there are certainly nice to have features like MPEG or block noise compression.
If you're aiming at a PVM, then you don't need progressive scan features or a HDMI output. There's not much you can do wrong. If you buy any player that looks like and weights as much as a tank, then you can be pretty sure that it was a high-end model and the analogue output was likely top-notch. Sony, Denon and Pioneer were considered the best manufacturers. My first dedicated DVD player (following a Pioneer LD/DVD combo player) was the Sony DVP-S7700 and later on a Sony DVP-NS999ES, modded with SDI.
Speaking of SDI in general: if you got a PVM with a SDI input and the ability to upgrade using a SDI card, then this is certainly something to consider. SDI mods on pre-HDMI DVD player tapped the signal directly after the MPEG decoder, so this as good as it gets, if you want raw, unaltered 480i.

I've always been curious about sdi. I finally got my harmony remote working with my lumagen that has sdi in, now I would just need a player.

How does 480i tend to look using the Extron RGB 240p trick with DVD playback? Would that be something worth looking at? Just an idea.

I've done it with PS2 game playback, but not DVD - it looked pretty shite. If you're gonna try to make DVD playback progressive I'd def say bring 'er upwards, not downwardsstrayan wrote:How does 480i tend to look using the Extron RGB 240p trick with DVD playback?
