[Tip] How to get a VP50 (or any) PSU replacement in 2020

Post by shawly »

Ever since I got my DVDO VP50 Pro without any accessories I was looking for a 6V/7A power supply, but I only found 6V/5A psus and apparently working 5V/10A psus.

But it doesn't sit right with me using power supplies that aren't matching the required specs, but getting an original power supply is next to impossible as well, at least for a decent price.

Yet I finally found a solution and a pretty cheap one at that, Alibaba!
I accidentally stumbled onto a manufacturer that produces power supplies with custom specs as you wish, they offered me a free sample though the shipping would've been over 70$ so I declined.

Next I simply opened an RFQ for a 6V 7A psu, a day later emails started rolling in as around 10 manufacturers offered me to manufacture me a PSU with these specs.

I was looking at one that seemed promising and the employee said they can offer me a free sample if I pay for shipping, did that and 15 days later, I got my 6V/7A psu that is working perfectly fine with my VP50 Pro!
Finally I can throw away the fire hazard 6V/5A psu I got from ebay. And for a mere $26 paid for shipping, I think this is a pretty good deal, but I can't tell how long it'll last so we'll see.

If anyone wants to know, it was this manufacturer.

They need to know the following specs for a VP50 Pro:
6V 7A
5,5x2,1mm DC jack (center positive)
C8 port for power
and your input voltage

This is obviously not only applicable for PSUs like the VP50 Pro since basically any custom PSU can be manufactured.
I just wanted to leave this here, because I didn't find a single thread on the internet that mentioned Alibaba for finding a matching PSU, maybe this can help someone in the future.

Sidenote: You definitely have to be aware, that there ARE scammers on this platform. So if you get an offer, first check the vendor profile on how long they are active on the site, as well as ratings and what their shop actually sells. Also your safest bet is to pay with Paypal, as you get the buyer protection if you select that you want to send money for a service or item (not send money to friends).

for the longest time matching power supplies were indeed nowhere to be found. I've been using a lab power supply (with adjustable output) for many years now for that exact reason.

Recently matching 6V8A power supplies have become available though: https://www.ebay.com/itm/264525796227
