can someone recommend me a motherboard/graphic card please?

Post by agent4125 »

Hi

I have a jamma cab with a few boards (e.g. raiden, flying shark, twin cobra). I'm running them on a jamma switcher, and in a free slot on the switcher I want to attach an ultimarc JPAC and connect a PC to it running Mame, so I can play the other shooters I don't have boards for, on the same jamma cab.

I'd like to run groovymame (probably groovyarcade on linux). I have a hantarex polo/3 15Khz monitor. The most recent game I'd run on it would probably be raidendx, but mostly it'll be running 80s stuff.

I realise I don't need an ultra powerful PC, but I'd like something fast enough so it has a *bit* of room to spare and also a graphics card that ticks all the groovymame low pixel clock boxes. I also don't really want a loud powerhouse gpu that needs a big noisy fan. I'd like the whole thing to be quiet as possible.

I did have a system before that had a radeon x600 which was pretty good, but wondered if there is anything newer/better that doesn't require a big fan/noise.

Can anyone recommend a PC/motherboard/ram spec and graphics card to suit the above?

Thanks

I'd say go for a used AMD/ATI HD5450 from Ebay. They're the standard for GroovyMAME / CRTEmudriver and you can get them for ~$10USD.

Do you have a CPU already? If not, I'd recommend the new AMD Ryzen 3300x for $120 if you can find one. Just make sure you get a mobo that has a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (I think the card will work on a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot as well).

If you want to save a bit of money at the cost of a bit of performance, the Ryzen 3100 should also be a great chip at $100.

Something like the MSI Pro-M2 MAX uATX mobo for $75. You would just need to make certain it supports the 3100 or 3300x out of the box or supports BIOS flashback (CPU-less BIOS updating).

The Ryzen 3600 is not as cheap but at $167 is still a great chip for such a build, and will definitely be supported out of the box with the board mentioned above.

Thanks very much for your help. I'll have a good look at the stuff you've recommended.
