Crestron HD-SCALER Out of Range Errors

Post by MrMistermister »

Hello,

I recently bought secondhand (and confirmed working before sent) a Creston HD-SCALER. Not the new HD-SCALER-HD-E model, but the older one. I read a few posts on here and other forums where people have had success in pairing this with the OSSC. It's possible I was wrong though.

I can't get this thing to display anything at all. All I get are "out of range" or "no signal" errors from my displays. Again, it was confirmed working from the seller I bought it from.

I've tried:
- Using a 4K TV and a computer monitor as outputs
- Using different HDMI cables
- Restoring defaults on the HD-SCALER
- Using the OSSC (SNES & PS2 at various LineX values) and my PC as inputs
- Upgrading the firmware with my computer

Unfortunately, I can't find any way to change any of the settings without being able to see the OSD on screen. I don't think its rejecting the input signals that I'm giving it either, because the front "HDMI IN/OUT" LEDs are lit. That makes me think it could be outputting a resolution/refresh rate that my displays aren't compatible with by default. I don't think its the fault of any of my input devices I've tried, but again, I could be wrong.

I'm at a total loss at this point. I think I might just return it if I can't get anything out from it. If there's anyone on this forum that has more expert experience with this scaler than me, I'd love some suggestions. I feel pretty stupid right now.

I'm not super familiar with the older HD-Scaler but I am with Crestron in general. The way to work with and adjust the settings is to use their program called Toolbox. You can connect to it via USB direct if you don't have it on a network. That will give you access to a complete functions menu for the unit. So if you haven't given up on it yet, the Toolbox software is your gateway into it. If you can't find it anywhere drop me a message.

Oh sweet, thank you!

I actually already have the toolbox software, I just didn't know it could control it like that. How do you do it for the Crestron products you've used? The process might be similar.

With toolbox it's always the same. Once you connect over USB or LAN the Functions pull down populates with all the different tools you can use for it, depending on the product. It's odd that it doesn't at least give you picture out of the box, but who knows what EDID and resolution settings it had previous. You can factory default it from toolbox and other things once you are in that way. I would think that if a fresh factory default setting doesn't at least give you a usable image on your display then maybe something is in fact wrong with it. You can also a text console from toolbox to manually enter commands. Normally hitting the ? will give you a list of basic commands available for it.
You will at least have options you don't otherwise with no image since you can't use the remote.

That makes sense. It seems the only thing I could access with this scaler through the toolbox is the text console, and from there I only had options to restore factory defaults and turn hot plug on or off. All other commands are just for analyzing signal data and whatnot.

Well that's a bummer. Everything I've read on the internet says it should just work out of the box, so I'm confused why none of the displays in my house seem to accept the signal. Even after a factory reset.

Thanks for your advice anyhow. It was still really helpful.

You can’t operate these without the remote. Do you have one?

You could try navigating blindly using the screenshots in the manual.

I have one yeah. I was only able to factory reset going blind, I couldn't for the life of me change any other settings. The manual isn't very specific :(

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just my TV. It's a Hisense H8F. I've had tons of issues with getting the OSSC to work on it, even with consoles that shouldn't have issues.

Yeah. No dice with the reset button.

Thanks for being willing to do that. I really appreciate it.

Menu
Down
Down
Ok
Ok
Press up 32 times (cycles through the list of resolutions from the very bottom to the top; the topmost being the one you want)
Ok
Ok

Give it a few seconds between pressing each ‘ok’ because it sometimes doesn’t register if you press ok in quick succession.

Thanks so much for doing that. Unfortunately I still can't get it to work. I tried it a few times with some restore defaults in between and I got nothing. I guess it could be something that happened to it in shipment? But I opened it up and nothing looked out of the ordinary on the inside. It was packaged pretty well too.

I don't know much about resolutions and timings and whatnot, but I have a feeling this TV I have might just be incredibly picky with its inputs. I don't think it's the fault of the scaler at all, I've heard great stuff about it. OSSC compatibility by itself is super spotty--way spottier than the last two TVs that I had.

Thanks again for giving me those directions strayan.

That’s very unusual. I’ve tried mine on at least 5 different TV’s and never had a problem. My only suggestion is to try unplugging everything and replugging it all in again as a last resort. I did originally have an issue with a flaky power supply.
