I recently got my NTSC-J 360 and games out of storage and started streaming mostly futari since being stuck inside on quarantine. I was working with an old hand-me-down Avermedia capture card that can do 720p60 and 1080p30 with HDMI in/out on my CRT using OBS's preview window which had intense frame rate changes, (surprisingly little input lag), other issues with the image etc. I decided to buy a 1440p monitor so I could use the HDMI passthrough on the card and most games feel lagless (except saidaioujou) even though it is upscaling from 720p. I thought that the monitor would be a better/more functional purchase than getting something like an HDFury since I could use it for other games, general computing, etc. as well.
I know I should get a new capture card either way but I haven't researched them much yet so I don't know what's available. I don't know if there's one that could easily output to VGA or if I should just get something like an elgato 4k card. I don't want to spend like $800 on one though. I'm not trying to stream or record 2k/4k content just 720/1080p60.
What would be the best way to stream 360 shmup with the best picture and minimum input lag? Should I get an HDFury to convert HDMI to VGA and switch back to my CRT? Is there a scaler I could get to upscale 720/1080 to 2k/4k? (honestly the 720 on this monitor doesn't look or feel bad and I would prefer to keep using it)
I wish these games would run on a new xbox so I could just let the console scale up the content to this monitors native res lol
I appreciate any insight you guys could provide. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place or there is a thread like this already- I come around this site often but lurk more than post lol.
Xbox 360 Shmup Streaming Setup?
Re: Xbox 360 Shmup Streaming Setup?
you need a capture card without live encoding. This gives you instant preview. A lossless signal is passed through USB3 to your PC and the PC has to handle the encoding. You get minimum lag even in the preview window (in the capture app or OBS). If you use a single monitor setup and your monitor has two inputs, you can still use the completely lag-free passthrough (if the capture card offers such a thing). The Elgato HD60S would fit your needs. What would be the best way to stream 360 shmup with the best picture and minimum input lag?
there are, but they're expensive and you always add some lag. Unless your monitor completely sucks at upscaling, you should be fine without one.Is there a scaler I could get to upscale 720/1080 to 2k/4k? (honestly the 720 on this monitor doesn't look or feel bad and I would prefer to keep using it)

If you plan on going the HDMI route your best bet especially for external capture devices would be the startech usb3.0 capture or the magewell capture cards since they output RGB flawlessly. Just be sure to use a proper video splitter.
For your solution I HIGHLY recommend the startech USB 3.0 capture since it's basically a micomsoft xcapture-1 with different drivers..
Elgato isn't all that great btw... I've had a very low success rate with all of their products

I agree for most of live encoders, but in terms of a streamlined capture setup, there's probably hardly a difference between using an Elgato HD60S and a Startech unit. You wouldn't even use the Elgato software. The capture unit just a provides an interface here and fees the uncompressed image to OBS.Elgato isn't all that great btw... btw: the new Atem Mini Pro does offer an encoded h264 stream and directly links into a YT or twitch stream setup. You still need a PC for extended controls, but this is essentially a standalone solution.

Elgato as a whole doesn't output real RGB video off HDMI even if you enable it on your modern consoles or if you're using an ossc or framemeister

Sorry for the late reply but I appreciate all your help. I decided to stick with the LCD monitor and I bought a budget 1080p capture card for now.
