Air Attack and Twin Action

Post by Jac2Mac »

Hi guys!

A few releases ago, MAME emulated two ultra rare shooters which are Air Attack from 1996 by Comad and Twin Action from 1995 by AFEGA. I have not played either of these games yet but has anyone else played these two games and if they did, could they give me an opinion on these two games?

Thanks guys!

umm, not to sound like a jerk, but why don't you download them yourself and play them? It is better to experience things on your own rather than seek opinions from others.

Probably because he hasn't been able to find them. I've been searching for Air Attack since it was announced & have yet to see it for dl anywhere. Looks awesome though.

Air attack is available at a site I use but it is still classed as not properly working.

I went back to mame 0.9 a while ago so I don't think I'll be able to test it.

Isn't Comad that company who made some crap porn games and stuff?

I guess this may give you an idea of how good the game is :)

i've just downloaded and played both. air attack is dooyong quality - amusingly inept technically and completely uninspired. twin action is a rather charmless attempt at a cute shooting game, better than air attack but still not very good. i give them both my highest unrecommendation.

I'm pretty sure Air Attack is a ripoff of another game, but I forget which one.

Sonofa, Twin Action is Fire Mustang MD. What a rip.
It's a decent game and I'm glad to own it. Not the best horizontal shooter, but not the worst by a long shot, it's worth a go every now and then.
But what a weak copy by Afega, having the 3rd Stage look identical is -10 in my books.

Some of these bootleg games are hilarious!

Their art skills are getting a bit better, but every once in a while, you get a graphic that was obviously drawn in MSPaint in 5 minutes. (http://haze.mameworld.info/2006/04/06/how-ridiculous/)

It's fun to play these games, either in MAME or on Famiclones, but the one thing ruining the experience on almost any Asian original/bootleg I can think of is the atrocious sound. Please, don't hire the graphic artist to make the sound too!

So much time and energy devoted to copying and bootlegging, why don't they dedicate their time to making original games?

The 1st boss in air attack is the 1st boss from Tyrian. I dont know how they got away with that, and I never played any further to see if they stole other sprites.

Are you serious? I guess I won't be downloading Air Attack then. Tyrian is one of my favorite games, & for someone to blatantly rip it off like that just burns my toast.

They stole lots of backgrounds from Tyrian: the sea and cliffs with cannons (e.g. Savara levels), the desert including the characteristic domed buildings, the barracks with numbers on top (both 92 and 812), the icy and snowy land (including cliffs and bubble craters), the bluish industrial rock platforms (including the arches and other special features), the sunlit rock platforms with large grey and pink rocks (including roads), several clouds and grey asteroids.

Of course transitions have been butchered and the tiles themselves have been altered.

Air Attack is a Thunder Dragon bootleg.

It's not a bootleg, the game is rather different. They copied the specific screen you noticed and possibly other graphics, and probably some code (the hardware is similar) but with enough hacking to consider Air Attack an autonomous game.

The only significant similarity I notice is the persistence of a wimpy twin forward cannon when the player shoots entirely different stuff, a clear sign of a copied game engine under the hood.

I don't have time to compare Thunder Dragon graphics in detail, but I'm sure others will find other "inspirations" of these mad Comad hackers and tell more about this one.
