Stern's Astro Invader lands on the Colecovision

Post by llabnip »

Not breaking news... but for anyone that still has their Colecovision up and running a port of Stern's Astro Invader has been released as a homebrew and I can attest that the port is really well done. Astro Invader looks like a cross between Space Invaders and Galaxian but the gameplay and feel are very different. To my knowledge, this is the first home port of this classic game. A few screenshots can be found here:

In addition, the Colecovision will see a port of Gulkave - a circa 1986 shmup that was originally released on the Sega SG-1000:

Love to see some older consoles get some new shooter ports (or even proto-shooters for that matter)! Getting a "new" 25 year old game port done with so much care (including case, cart, manual and artwork) for a classic system is really neat. If you have your Colecovision still up and running consider supporting the effort.

This sort of thing puts a smile on my face. Those few new releases on the Vectrex have got me seriously thinking of buying one again. Never had a Colecovision personally.

I never had a Vectrex but my friend did. I had the CV instead - both were great machines that saw plenty of arcade ports and a few good shooters to boot. I remember playing tons of the 2D side-scrolling Cosmic Avenger (Universal 1981) on the CV and then played Konami's Scramble on the Vectrex and thought - what a rip-off!! (not realizing that Scramble was an original Arcade game that was quite a bit more popular than Cosmic Avenger when all was said and done). I don't know which one came first - both are listed as 1981 releases in the Arcade.
