CAVE Shmupmania 5/1/2020-5/2/2020
Figured this incredible event I helped put together deserved a hype thread. For those not aware, this is a split-screen stream event featuring some of the best Western and Japanese players playing together. For the sake of easing communication between the two scenes, the stream chat will also feature built-in translation software. Compared to past events that have generally been centered around either Japanese demos or Western demos, I think something like this is a big milestone in relations between these communities.
Full player schedule
The dates/times are Japanese time, so people in America/Europe should take that into consideration. For those in Pacific time zone, the first day will be on 5/1 at 9 PM and the 2nd day will be 5/2 at 8 PM.
I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say this might be the most loaded line-up ever put on in terms of top talent, at least in terms of arcade games (Touhou world cup seemed comparable).
A quick rundown of what's on tap:
Day 1:
A Mushi Ultra race featuring Kiwi, fresh off his STG Weekly episode, demoing WR-tier scoring strategies against a Japanese player who's cleared the mode, norio.
Me playing Futari 1.5 Ultra and showcasing some my usual balls-to-the-wall strats alongside a Futari BL God doubleplayer, bobnyan
Daringspino showing off WR level DFK Arrange A strats alongside a top-level DFK 1.5 player, HIS
A 3-way Ketsui race between three of the best Ketsui players in the world right now in PKE, TES, and our own Moglar5k
Day 2:
A super hype SDOJ race between the two best players in the world, Kayar and peketti, with both having grinded some new strats of late
The 2nd best Esp Ra.De player in the world, YMG, doing a superplay alongside Moglar5k
Back-to-back solo superplays by the B type WR holders in DOJ BL (rokukichi) and DOJ WL (fufufu)
It all happens at https://www.twitch.tv/testestes
For those who can't catch it live, all videos will be reuploaded and a retrospective hosted by Softdrink and featuring some of the players is also planned for after the event.
You guys in?

Not sure I'll be able to catch that live due to timezones and stuff but I'm glad Softdrink will reupload it. I'll have to check the archives in case I can't make it.
Sounds like an event with lots of cool runs for sure!

Did anyone really need an event dedicated solely to Cave games? They were half of the schedule for Shmup Slam 2 and they're practically all you see on Twitch -- and the rare times you do see other shmups on Twitch it's an absolute meme like Turbo Force or Hacha Mecha Fighter. It's inevitable that any general purpose shmup event will be dominated by Cave. I'd be much more interested to see an event that bans Cave in an attempt to highlight games from Capcom, Konami, Psikyo, Irem, SNK, NMK, etc.

Would you rather have no shmup coverage or shmup coverage? If you want to have other games featured, then put something together. Big world out there and we are all online, make your own change.blossom wrote:Did anyone really need an event dedicated solely to Cave games? Agree 110%. Preach! I’d be far more likely to tune in if there was something to see besides Cave games.blossom wrote:Did anyone really need an event dedicated solely to Cave games? That said, hope the Cave fans enjoy.

Thanks for posting this Gus. It's rare I have the day off for these sort of events.

This starts tonight. I'll try to catch one or two of the runs and enjoy the novelty of it, plus the skill

Wish it was happening mid-day so most could catch it live. Looking forward to watching it anyway.

I was able to watch both Mushi and Futari. Was neat to see 2 players playing side by side (not coop, 2 screens at the same time).
Gus you did amazing with Ultra, stage 2 boss milk was just bonkers. More importantly though was hearing your positive vibes and enthusiasm, we could really tell you were having fun.
Was nice seeing some old familiar names in chat, the turnout seemed excellent, between 300-400 viewers iirc.

Re: CAVE Shmupmania 5/1/2020-5/2/2020
I wasn't able to watch all the runs, but I gotta say, seeing moglar5k get the 2ALL with both PKE and SPS falling was pretty exciting. Congratulations dude!
And of course, gus' live Futari pb was mad fun! Given his energy, happiness, and touhou eurobeat, he put on a show like he usually does.
I watched most of the SDOJ run (it was getting late for me), and it was fun to see the game so thoroughly attacked. I got to learn a lot more about it, the hyper system, and how to 'properly' play the game as well.
I'm sure it's probably a good thing in general, but I wonder if the 30-minute reset timer kinda killed the momentum a bit - especially the SDOJ run that reset right as the timer was about to hit 0!
